Kamal, A Victim Of Jaya's Game? Wants To Leave India

Producer-director-actor Kamal Haasan at last opened up on the problems he faced in the making and the release of his magnum opus 'Viswaroopam'.

Talking to the media after the ban imposed by the Jayalalitha government of Tamilnadu was lifted by the high court, he said he became a victim of a political game. Reports earlier suggested that Chief Minister Jayalalita had an axe to grind against Kamal Haasan and stage-managed Muslim opposition for the film and slapped the ban. Several people who saw the other versions of the film in other areas said that there were no objectionable scenes in the film. The ban slapped on a film screened by the censor board was unconstitutional, argued Kamal's lawyers in the high court. Even super star Rajinikant appealed to his Muslim fans and Muslim groups to talk to Kamal and resolve the issue. He said he has been a friend of Kamal for the past 40 years and vouched that he would never do any thing to hurt the sentiments of Muslims or any other community.

Kamal said he had great faith in secularism and would do nothing to hurt the sentiments of Muslims or any other sections. Stating that he had sold all his properties to produce the film, Kamal said he was still ready to withdraw the film if it was proved that it would harm the integrity of the country.

Stating that he became a victim of a political game, he said he did not understand why there were so many hurdles for the release of his film.

Kamal initially faced problems with the exhibitors. He wanted to release the film on DTH platform a day before its release. After exhibitors threatened to stop release of the film, Kamal dropped the idea and paved the way for the film's release. Meanwhile some Muslim organizations objected to the film and Jayalalitha quickly slapped a ban on it. The film is being successfully screened in Andhra Pradesh and overseas. But ban in Tamilnadu would mean that Kamal would lose Rs. 30 crore, said trade sources.

Though the high court of Madras lifted the ban, the TN government is keen on fighting against the court's judgment. The government challenged the high court's order on Wednesday before a division bench.

Kamal Haasan said if the ban on "Vishwaroopam" is not lifted, he might have to look out for a "secular state" and that can be out of the country.

"I have lost all my property for the film, so I have nothing to lose, but choose now. If the judgment is not favourable for me, I have to look out for a secular state abroad. We will get away from this place but will have lot of good memories," the 58-year-old told reporters at a press conference here.

"If there is no secular state in India, I would go overseas. I think Tamil Nadu wants me out. What would change is my passport; I would still be an Indian. I have pledged all my property for the film. I have lost my house because of delay in release," he added.

The Madras High Court Tuesday ruled in favour of "Vishwaroopam" and lifted the ban by the state government. It, however, said the administrative step was to be taken by the government. The actor says he still has to see the effect in theatres - the film has to run.

"The fact is that I have yet to get interim relief as some of my friends have reported in press. The film shows are stopped again and the police have sent away fans, asking for court order copy. I have been thrashed in a political game, monetary loss is not important," Haasan added.

The mega-budget film was due to release Jan 25, but the Tamil Nadu government banned the film following fears of law and order situation. The ban was further extended to Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

"I m yet to get interim relief. I have great faith in the secularism. I sold all my property for the film. I am ready for stop if it is proved that I damaged the integrity of the country. I don’t know why in Hyderabad also I faced so many troubles . I will bear any loss if it is proved that my film would cause damage to the country's integrity I will wage a legal war" he said.

Ippudendhi, Jaya de thappu antunnava?

Kamal ki baane 'freedom of expression' undhi TN lo. nuvvu, tamil brahmin ayithe artham avthundi vaadu almost anni cinemalo vallani degrade chesthadu.. easy ga theeskunnaru.

even ee cinemalo kooda, heroine ni 'pappathi' antadu okadu. adi oka degrading word used by dmk vallu for brahmin women implying that they are public goods.

As for Jaya, Kamal haasan is not a big deal. Ilanti problem jaya period lo ne vasthe, she suggested title change for the movie, and it got certificate and release. After that, Kamal haasan ochi baaga extralu kooda chesadu.

ee saari, he's dealing with a different community. It's not Jaya's fault. She can't be bothered about a movie. Antha important kaadu, for her.

Now only hope for Kamal is to beg the muslim community to let him release his movie.

Mohanbabu tho polika enti bhayya. Kamal is at a whole different level in insulting Hindus. Calling a brahmin woman 'pappathi' is freedom of expression aa? it's like a white guy calling an African 'nigger'. Has historical undertones in the anti brahmin movement in TN.

brahmins hurt avvadam antha vadiley. mammoole, emi pattinchu koru.

but don't blame Jaya completely. if anything, those muslim parties who are causing problems are to blame.

Like I said, jaya has solved a similar previous situation of Kamal by persuading him to change the movie title. ee saari, she would have offered suggestions, but Kamal is not in a position to implement them, coz muslims are offended by the entire movie ani chepthunnaaru.

What can Jaya do? She won't spend state funds to provide security for a film's release. Its after all only a damn film. Ee movie kaaka pothe vere cinema choodachu.

And regarding Kamal, like almost all Indian actors, he's an average/below average actor. slightly better as director perhaps.

Kamal emanna cheskoni. vaadu vaadi bodi naasthikamu. silly fellow, chinna pilladi la arguments chesthadu. it is irrelevant to this issue.

Kamal blame cheyyalemu ikkada. Just pointing out that he completely misread the muslim sentiments about their portrayal in movies. error in judgement. He thought they'll take it easy like Hindus do.

Jayalalitha oka pedha problem kaadu ee issue lo. she doesn't want to be seen as encouraging a movie that they feel portrays them badly. TN lo muslims arusthe, ame em chesthundi?

cinema ku enduku antha importance isthaaro Tamilians/Telugollu. Bodi cinema release ayithe entha avvaka pothe entha. Jaya, ame pani vadilesi ee cinema kosam pani cheyyali antaaru. Adi ameki ee upayogamu leni vishayam meeda.

Just blame those specific muslim orgs who create trouble. And for other popular TN muslims who are silent. Don't blame Jaya.
