Thomas (Gautham) is a reckless boy who has no discipline and the reason for that is his childhood filled with troubles. But life changes for him with the arrival of Father Sam (Arvind Swamy) a Christian priest who gives him a sense of direction. There is Berchmans (Arjun) who is a notorious guy and he has a past issue with Sam. With his plan, he gets Sam into an issue and puts him in jail. Meanwhile, Thomas comes across Priya (Thulasi) and starts liking her but Sam’s absence again stirs his instincts and he joins Berchmans gang. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

The director has come up with a very different storyline and while the presentation was grand, the narrative was a letdown. The dialogues were alright. The script was weak and the screenplay was adequate. The background score was not that great and only two songs were worth listening. Cinematography was top notch. Editing should have been crisp. Costumes were suiting the moods while the art department was royal. Gautham Karthik did a good [url="http://www.bharatstudent.com/review/2-2190/kadali-movie-review#"]job[/url] given his debut and he was neat. Thulasi Nair is weak in looks but good in expressions. Arvind Swamy looks handsome as ever and he was impressive. Arjun was the best among the lot and portrayed the negative shades in a good way. The others didn’t have much to offer.

The film is the dubbed version of the Tamil film ‘Kadal’ but since it is made by Mani Ratnam, the expectations are high. The first half goes about with the layering of the characters and how they relate to each other and the interval bang was not that great. The second half shifts track and focuses on the romance angle with a slightly weak emotional impact. Overall, this is a film which has good style and nice visual experience but not enough material to impress. At the box office, this will not be a successful venture.

Mani Ratnam’s Kadali has been in the news for more than one reason. First, it marks the launch of two star kids in Gautam Kartik and Tulasi and secondly is the comeback film for Aravind Swamy. Music by A R Rahman, especially the Gunjukunna song has created a decent buzz for the movie. Kadali also stars action king Arjun and Lakshmi Manchu in other roles. The movie has finally released amidst yet another big budget film Ongolu Gitta today, so let’s see how it is.[/size][size=4]
[b]Story:[/b][/size][size=4]
Berchmans(Arjun) and Sam(Aravind Swamy) are members of a christian missionary, who are getting trained to become holy fathers in future. One day an unexpected event occurs and Sam complaints against Berchmans who is eventually kicked out of the Church. An angry Berchmans pledges to Sam that he will return back and take his revenge.[/size][size=4]
As time passes by Sam is posted as a holy father in a small fishing village. He slowly gathers people around him, and also instills religiousness in the village. During this phase, he also gives shelter to an orphan named Thomas(Gautam Kartik) and takes good care of him.[/size][size=4]
One fine day Sam happens to meet Berchmans, and this meeting lands Sam in big trouble.[/size][size=4]
While all this is going on, Thomas happens to meet Beatrice(Tulasi) and falls in love with her, only to realise that she is the daughter of Berchmans. Rest of the film is as to how Thomas helps Father Sam, and fights against Berchmans to win his love.[/size][size=4]
[b]Positive Points:[/b][/size][size=4]
Kadali is an out and out Arjun and Aravind Swamy film. Both of them suit their roles perfectly. Arjun looks good and plays the perfect bad guy. He has dubbed with his own voice, which gives more edge to his character. Aravind Swamy gets a meaty role, which he delivers with ease. He plays the role of Church father with peace and sincerity.[/size][size=4]
Gautam Kartik makes a decent debut with Kadali. He suits his role and has been well trained for his character. On the other hand, the female lead Tulasi does not have much to do in the first half and looks OK . Laksmi Manchu’s cameo is neat.[/size][size=4]
[b]Negative Points:[/b][/size][size=4]
As in all Mani Ratnam movies, pace of the movie is very slow. Some scenes involving Aravind Swamy and his preachings, could have been easily removed. The romantic track between the couple lacks clarity. Heroine’s character has hardly any weight, and is utilized only in the last half hour of the movie.[/size][size=4]
The romantic elements which all Mani Ratnam films have, are completely missing in this film. Some scenes have been dragged out, and the realistic approach might not be liked by all.[/size][size=4]
The movie has absolutely no comedy or any fun moments in the film. As the first half of the movie looks interesting and nicely set up, second half is a big set back. The pace drops drastically and the films starts to waver.[/size][size=4]
The absence of any commercial values will make this film tough to appreciate for regular cinema lovers.[/size][size=4]
[b]Technical Aspects:[/b][/size][size=4]
As in all Mani Ratnam films, Kadali is high on technical values. Camera work by Rajeev Menon is stunning. The movie is based near the beaches and the locales have been captured beautifully.[/size][size=4]
A R Rahman’s music is ok and the sole hit number ‘Gunjukunna’ comes only in the background. The background score is good. Dialogues are OK but some heavy duty Christianity related words have been used. Lyrics of the movie are poetic and the editing is good. Screenplay is just about OK.[/size][size=4]
[b]Verdict:[/b][/size][size=4]
On a whole, Kadali is a film completely based on Arjun and Aravind Swamy. Slow paced narration, weak romantic track and lack of a gripping screenplay go against the film. Kadali is a not Mani Ratnam’s best work. If you are hell bent on watching it, go without any expectations.[/size][/size][/font][/color]

Kadali is the story of Sam Fernandez (Arvind Swamy) and Bergmans (Arjun) who undergo training for priesthood in a Christian institution. Bergmans is a fun loving guy and will be thrown out of the institution due to a mishap. Sam Fernandez is sincere and hardworking and later settles as a priest in a local church. He brings up a local orphan Thomas (Karthik) who later falls in love with Priya (Thulasi) who is the daughter of Bergmans. What happens next forms the actual story![/font][font=Arial,]

Karthik and Thulasi looked good on screen and they brought the freshness required by the script. Gautam delivered a decent performance as an orphan and Thulasi is not so good in looks but fared well in expressions. But both of them did not get enough screen space in the movie. Thulasi in particular was confined to only 2-3 scenes in the first half and some more in second.[/font][font=Arial,]

Mani Ratnam is one director who can woo audience to theaters with his films. His films have more realistic touch in them to which audience can connect easily. Just like Sachin Tendulkar can be out duck for the first ball, Mani Ratnam is not entirely flawless. He had selected a decent story line for the movie but faltered in narrating it.The movie began well but lost it track as it approaches the end. The novelty audience expect from Mani Ratnam film is missing in entirety.[/font][font=Arial,]

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is good. At some places, they have used the music of The Dark Knight graciously. As Kamal Hassan said in one of his interviews, the movie does not need any songs. They were kept just for the sake of keeping them. All of them seem to be misfit and disturbing the flow of the movie.[/font][font=Arial,]

The first half of the movie deals with introduction of characters in the story and establishing links between them. The interval bang also passes with out much excitement. Mani seem to have got distracted in the second half and focused too much in the romance on the lead pair which was also not so convincing. The emotional bonding between the movie and audience which is one of the major strengths of Mani Ratnam is clearly missing. There are severe doubts over it BO potential.[/font][font=Arial,]
