Only 2.42 lakh people out of 49.96 lakh Aadhaar card holders in Hyderabad and just 52,000 out of 26.4 lakh card holders in Ranga Reddy district have Aadhaar-linked bank accounts so far, according to figures released at the state-level bankers’ conference held on Saturday at Jubilee Hall. Cooking gas cylinders will cost Rs 1,000 from February 15, of which the OMCs will credit subsidy amount of Rs 550 directly into the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of consumers. Ordinary bank accounts will not do and consumers have to open a special Aadhaar bank account into which the subsidy will be paid. Ninety-four per cent of card holders do not have such an account. The civil supplies department, which is enabling the scheme, is doing nothing to make the public aware of the requirements, especially the Aadhaar-linked bank account. The officials themselves don’t know whether the subsidy will be credited prior to the purchase of the cylinder or after. The OMCs will credit the subsidy amount of Rs 550 into the consumer’s bank account in advance, and the consumer will have to withdraw that amount, add `450 and pay the full amount to the cylinder delivery boy at that time.

Confusion prevails over the submission of Aadhaar details to LPG distribution agencies. While some agencies are asking consumers to open fresh accounts, others are asking them to link their existing bank account number to the Aadhaar number. “There is no need to open a fresh account. Existing account numbers can be submitted. Accounts in all nationalised and scheduled banks are valid,” said M.V.S. Rami Reddy, deputy DG, UIDAI.
