Lakhs of candidates who had sat for the recruitment exam for Village Revenue Officers and Village Revenue Assistants conducted by the state Revenue department in December 2011 were grossly over qualified.
While the minimum qualification required for a VRA’s post was SSC and for the VRO’s post Intermediate, more than half of the applicants were degree holders, PGs, double-PGs, M.Phils, PhDs besides holding professional degrees like B.Tech, M.Tech etc.

The starting salary for a VRO is Rs 7,000 per month, while for a VRA, it is just Rs 3,000. But this had not deterred about 60,000 B.Tech graduates who had completed engineering courses in computer science, information technology, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering from applying.
The above is a classic example of the craze for government jobs in the state.

“There has always been a big craze for government jobs among students. The demand had come down in the late 90s due to increased job opportunities in the private sector because of economic reforms introduced by the Centre.

“Also the software boom in the early 2000s had resulted in more students opting for technical courses to bag jobs in IT and ITES sectors. Students were drawing minimum salaries of `25,000 per month in IT and BPO sectors immediately after completing B.Tech. After the global recession of 2008, students today are increasingly looking at government jobs which offer job security,” said Prof. S. Satyanarayana, vice-chancellor, Osmania University.

According to placement experts, the craze for government jobs is due to job security, attractive retirement benefits, low job stress, relaxed office environment and decent pay, especially after the implementation of the new pay scales.

“All these factors are turning the tide in favour of government jobs. The salaries offered by Public Sector Units have increased over the same period. Companies such as BHEL and BEL offer starting salaries of up to `6 lakh, which is much higher than software firms,” said Mr N.L.N. Reddy, placement officer at Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology, Gandipet.
