While MIM president and Hyderabad MP Assaduddin Owaisi declined to comment, T Devender Goud, a senior TDP leader and Rajyasabha member, confirmed the development and said the issue was very much on the cards. As far as friendship with MIM is considered, we are open to the idea especially it would be important keeping the national politics in mind. However, we need to address certain intricacies before saying a final word on it," said Devender Goud. While talking about the national politics, Goud hinted at TDP playing a pivotal role in forming a third front at the Centre and the alliance with the MIM would go long way in realizing it. He said, "You will witness a lot of changes and movements in the national politics in the near future and keeping that in view, we need to approach to the possible alliance with the MIM," he said. Following Bhagyalakshmi Temple issue, MIM broke ranks with the Congress-led alliance and took back the support from Kiran Kumar Reddy government that led to verbal duel between the two parties, while the acrimony peaked with the arrest of the MIM legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi for his hate speech. While it appeared that the YSR Congress is the natural ally to the MIM after its departure from the ruling alliance, it sprang surprise by staying away from supporting the no-confidence motion against the Congress government co-sponsored by the YSR CP. And its last week's move in the Assembly was in line with that of the TDP. "For MIM, it is also a sort of sentimental issue. When Akbaruddin Owaisi was arrested, the move which we took as the government's witch hunting against the party, no party except TDP criticized the CM for his vindictive politics. The silence of YSR Congress was not just conspicuous but understandable," said an MIM leader. As a political analyst said, the alliance with MIM would benefit the TDP especially in Telangana because as many as 30 assembly segments of the total 119 constituencies in the region have over 30% of Muslim voters, and in almost all the segments the minority community has at least 10-20 % of vote share, while their stand is decisive in over 50 seats. "TDP is in need of a strong partner in the region in order to bag substantial number out of 17 Loksabha seats and 119 Assembly seats. MIM is a force to reckon with in the districts like Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Karimnagar. In any case, the next political combination we are going witness would be definitely interesting," said the analyst. While the MLC elections from the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency (GHMC) slated for April 13 could be the first step of the alliance between MIM and TDP wherein the parties might join hands to win a lone seat going for the polls, the parties are likely to skip it considering technicalities. While MIM is out of the ruling alliance in the state Assembly, the party with 45 corporaters in the 100-member GHMC is still supported by 35 members of Congress in GHMC. It can come out of the alliance and still retain power if TDP with 16 members supports the party. However, the time is short for completing the process before the MLC polls, and Assaduddin Owaisi said his party was yet to decide on the plan.
