I personally have taken the route of searching in matrimony however it didn't workout as much as I expected it to be so we choose a different approach and fortunately all worked well.
I don't think there is anything wrong with using matrimonial sites, neither it is illlegal/ immoral nor people using those services are bad people.

I think 'Trust' is the main issue, you have to work hard to find real motives of the man/woman of your interest. You will find some amazingly genuine people out there who can add a different dimension to you and obviously some horrible people with very bad attitude and motives as well. I guess as it's no different to anyother ways of finding your perfect life partner except you have the advantage of choosing from a broad spectrum of people profiles which one wouldn't have access to otherswise.
I believe you have to use your sensibilities and experience in life to judge well.

More traditional approach aitey you would have already known about other family through friends or relatives before hand which helps you to make informed decision.
