WASHINGTON — President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama paid more than $112,000 in taxes in 2012, paying an effective federal income tax rate of just above 18% for 2012, according to the White House.
The Obamas and Vice President Biden and his wife released their tax returns on Friday, three days ahead of the April 15 tax filing deadline.
The Obamas' adjusted gross income for the year was $608,611. The president earned more than $394,000 in salary, and the Obamas took in another $258,000 in book royalties.
The White House notes that under Obama's budget proposal, which calls for those earning more than $1 million to pay at least 30% of their income, the president would have paid more in taxes.
The Obamas donated $150,034 — or about 24.6% of their adjusted gross income — to charities. The largest reported gift to a charity was $103,871 to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides free housing for military family members of sick and injured U.S. troops during their hospitalizations.
The Bidens paid $87,851 in federal taxes on adjusted gross income of $385,072. They paid $13,531 in Delaware income tax and $3,593 in Virginia income tax. The vice president's wife, Jill Biden, is a professor at Northern Virginia Community College
The Bidens contributed $7,190 to charity in 2012, with the biggest cash donation of $2,400 going to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, Del. They also donated $2,000 in clothing, furniture and toys to Goodwill and the Ministry of Caring, a Delaware organization serving the poor and homeless.
