Obama Backs Immigration Reform Bill

WASHINGTON: President [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Barack-Obama"]Barack Obama[/url] has endorsed a proposed legislation to overhaul the US immigration system which will allow 11 million undocumented immigrants, including nearly 300,000 Indians, to become American citizens.

Obama requested [color=#0000FF !important][u]the Senate[/u][/color] to quickly move forward [color=#0000FF !important][u]the Comprehensive[/u][/color] [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Immigration-Reform-Bill"]Immigration Reform Bill[/url] proposed by a bipartisan group of eight Senators, saying the legislation, once passed, will pave the way for the required changes in the immigration rules.

"The bill will provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally. It will modernise our legal immigration system so that we're able to reunite families and attract highly-skilled entrepreneurs and engineers who will help create good paying jobs and grow our [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Economy"]economy[/url]," said [color=#0000FF !important][u]the US President[/u][/color].

He said although the legislation may not provide "everything" due to its "compromising" nature owing to various complications, it will bring in [color=#0000FF !important][u]the necessary amendments[/u][/color] required in country's immigration policy.

"It is largely consistent with the principles that I have repeatedly laid out for comprehensive reform. This bill will continue to strengthen security at our borders and hold employers more accountable if they knowingly hire [color=#0000FF !important][u]undocumented workers[/u][/color]," Obama said.

The President was speaking after being briefed on [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/The-Bill"]the bill[/url] by the two leading Senators [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Chuck-Schumer"]Chuck Schumer[/url] and [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/John-McCain"]John McCain[/url] at the White House.
