Latest developments: Police killed one Boston Marathon bombing suspect in an overnight shootout and searched house-to-house for his brother on Friday in the Boston suburb of Watertown, with much of Boston and surrounding communities under virtual lockdown.
During the bloody and dramatic night a university police officer was killed, a transit police officer was wounded and the suspects carjacked a vehicle before leading police on a chase that resulted in one of them being shot dead.
The man still on the loose was identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, and the dead suspect was his brother, Tamerlan Tsarneav, 26, authorities said. The brothers were from the Russian region near Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars. They had been in the United States for several years, officials said.
A gray Honda CRV believed to be linked to the suspect on the loose was found in Boston on Friday morning. Officers with guns drawn flooded a neighborhood in Watertown in the hunt for the suspect.
The men's uncle told The Associated Press that the brothers lived together near Boston and have been in the United States for about a decade.

This photo released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation shows a suspect that officials identified as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, being sought by police in the Boston Marathon bombings Monday
After the shootout, authorities launched a manhunt for Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev in the Boston suburb of Watertown. Heavily-armed police conducted a house-to-house search inside a 20-block area.
The flurry of developments came after the FBI on Thursday released photos and video of two suspects in the bombing and appealed to the public for help in identifying them. The younger suspect was seen in video wearing a white hat and setting down a backpack at the site of the second explosion at Forum Restaurant.
The suspects: Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were described by law enforcement officials as brothers from the Russian region near Chechnya.
Militants from Chechnya and other restive provinces in Russia's volatile North Caucasus have targeted Moscow and other areas with bombings and hostage-takings, but if it turns out that the suspects in the Boston bombings are linked to those insurgencies it would mark the first time the Russian conflict had spawned a major terror attack in the United States.
An uncle, Ruslan Tsarni of Montgomery Village, Md., told The Associated Press that the men lived together near Boston and have been in the United States for about a decade.
In May of 2011, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, then a senior at a prestigious high school, was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the city of Cambridge, Mass., to pursue higher education.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's page on the Russian social networking site Vkontakte says he attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, graduating in 2011, the year he won the scholarship, which was celebrated with a reception at City Hall, according to a news release issued at the time. Before moving to the United States, he attended School No. 1 in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim republic in Russia's North Caucasus that has become an epicenter of the Islamic insurgency that spilled over from Chechnya. On the social networking site, he describes himself as speaking Chechen as well as English and Russian. His world view is described as "Islam" and he says his personal goal is "career and money."
According to the website spotcrime.com, Tamerlan was arrested for domestic violence in July 2009, after assaulting his girlfriend.
He was an amateur boxer, listed as a competitor in a National Golden Gloves competition in 2009.
Boston on lockdown: In Boston and its western suburbs, authorities suspended mass transit and urged residents in Watertown, Newton, Arlington, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and all of Boston to stay indoors.
Mass transportation to and from the Boston area was virtually shut down Friday morning, with the exception of airplanes, which continue to take off and land at Logan International Airport.
Train and bus service was shut down and people waiting at bus and subway stops were told to go home.
Amtrak has stopped trains about an hour south of the city in Providence, R.I. Amtrak has also suspended its entire Downeaster service, which runs from Brunswick, Maine to Boston, according to spokesman Cliff Cole.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which operates commuter trains into Boston as well as the city's subway — called the T — and the city's buses suspended all operations. The one exception appears to be the Silver Line bus between Logan and downtown.
All major highways remained open, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The exception is Watertown, the center of the manhunt.
The FAA shut down airspace over the Boston manhunt area, Reuters reported.
The University Of Massachusetts Dartmouth closed its campus and ordered an evacuation after confirming that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is registered there.

The Tsarnaev brothers were Kyrgyz passport holders, and used those passports when applying for green cards in the United States, an official in the central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan said, according to CNN's Ivan Watson.
This doesn't mean they were born in Kyrgyzstan or that their family were Kyrgyz natives. Many Caucasus refugees received passports or refugee status in surrounding countries.

Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, the Boston Marathon attack suspect now at large, came to the United States as a tourist in the early 2000s and asked for asylum while he was here, a federal source said. He was naturalized last year. Tamerlan, the 26-year-old brother who was killed overnight, came "a few years later" and was a green-card holder, not a naturalized citizen, the source said, according to CNN's Mike Ahlers.
