Spartan Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 [b]Tirupati:[/b] Devotees will not be allowed entry into the shrine of Lord Venkateswara at nearby Tirumala for about 17 hours from 5pm Thursday to 10am Friday on account of lunar eclipse, temple sources said. They said the shrine would be closed an hour before sunset tomorrow and opened early on Friday. The priests would then conduct 'cleansing' of the ancient shrine, followed by pre-dawn rituals, including recitation of Suprabatham and Archana rituals. Pilgrims would be allowed to have a darshan of the Lord only after 10 AM on Friday, they said. According to the TTD almanac, the lunar eclipse would take place from 1.22 AM to 1.55 AM (a few minutes in small hours) on Friday, they added.

Spartan Posted April 24, 2013 Author Report Posted April 24, 2013 While all the temples across the country remained closed on Friday for almost ten hours due to the solar eclipse, the famous Shaivite temple at Srikalahasti remained open. The temple is famous for the ‘Rahu-Ketu’ puja being performed here everyday. The ritual is considered to ward off the evil effects in general and those caused by unfavourable planetary movements, in particular. While eclipses are a result of the positioning of the sun, earth and the moon in a straight line as per science, mythology has something different to say. [size="3"][color="red"]Hindu belief [/color][/size] According to Hindu belief, the celestial serpents ‘Rahu’ and ‘Ketu’ swallow the sun and the moon to cause solar and lunar eclipses respectively. As both the serpents are tamed and worshipped in this temple, it is strongly believed here that the eclipse will not cast any evil effect on the temple. The presiding deity in this temple ‘Srikalahastheeswara’ is a self-manifested ‘linga’, with a five-hooded serpent providing a canopy The ‘vaddanam’ (waist belt) of Goddess Gnana Prasunambika too has an icon of a snake. It is for this reason that the presiding deity and His consort are revered as ‘Rahu’ and ‘Ketu’ respectively. Further, according to information available in the scriptures, Surya (sun) and Chandra (moon) performed penance seeking Lord Shiva’s intervention to get them liberated from the serpents during eclipse. “The main deity in the sanctum sanctorum has a ‘Navagraha kavacham’ (armour with icons representing the nine planets of Hindu almanac) that indicates the Lord’s total control over the solar system. [size="3"][color="red"]Peculiar phenomenon [/color][/size] Since time immemorial, the temple has never been closed during eclipse for this very reason,” temple’s Executive Officer T. Sivaji told [i]The Hindu.[/i] There is also a sentiment that offering prayers at the temple during eclipse would rid one of all the ills and misfortune. As a result, locals thronged the temple on Friday, while visiting devotees unaware of this peculiar phenomenon, stayed away.
