you have to understand the mentality of humans to understand this concept. love, sentiment etc are feminine charateristics and hence females are attracted to it. money, power are masculine characteristics and hence males are attracted to it. in rich girl--poor boy case the boy earns for masculanity (money,power) which is present in girl and the girl earns for love sentiment which are present in the boy hence this combination is very popular. in rich boy- poor girl case is against natural characteristics as boy already has masculanity and is not attracted to a girl who has no money and power.
