Although it is quite evident that BJP will not be able to repeat the 2008 performance...the objective of NaMo's campaign is to improve the tally so as to deny simple majority for Congress as there is no hawa blowing for the dirtiest party of India

Forget Bangloreans, even local Congress contestants gave it a miss. Sonia Gandhi addressed an almost empty rally in Palace grounds Bangalore asking for votes. On the same day Narendra Modi addressed two mammoth rallies in Mangalore and Belgaum which were shown to large crowd gatherings on giant LCD screens across various cities of Karnataka. It was indeed an interesting contrast, where every word of Modi was analysed threadbare by the local media and internet while everybody gave a miss to Sonia’s speech. This is a leading indicator of the socio-political mood of the nation.

We have all heard of the green revolution and the milk revolution, but Karnataka and India were introduced to a new coinage of “Pink Revolution” by Narendra Modi yesterday. Speaking in Mangalore, he expounded on how the Congress government is incentivising cow slaughter in an agrarian nation like India by giving tax benefits to slaughter houses. This was an important intervention as there is polarization of non-Hindu votes in Mangalore city as well as in coastal-Karnataka in favour of the Congress party. By subtly raising a deeply emotional issue of cow slaughter in the economic contest rather than a religious one, Modi sent a message to Hindus of the region to unite in favour of the BJP.

In Belgaum, Modi showed his large heartedness by apologising to the people of Karnataka for any mistakes by the state BJP over the last 5 years. He also urged the people to not burn their houses due to their anger by voting for Congress and instead give BJP another chance to provide good governance. This really is the difference, in India today there is only one leader who talks so candidly to the unwashed masses. So much so, that he can even say sorry to them directly. Can we ever expect the Congress party to apologize for humungous corruption, or for price rise and inflation, or for bad governance and policy paralysis? Will the Congress ever apologiSe to Sarabjeet’s family? Will Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi ever say sorry to the families of our jawans who were mercilessly butchered on India-Pakistan borders?

Modi’s call for a Congress free India and Karnataka has enthused BJP cadre like never before. They are now more charged up than they were even during the 2008 elections. I travelled in North Karnataka for 3 days and everywhere I went, there was talk of Modi’s Bangalore speech. “We are already suffering by marrying our first daughter (Dilli) to the Congress, how can we be so foolish to hand our second daughter (Bangalore) to the same criminals?” was a refrain I heard from many women.

Does this mean BJP will storm back to power in Karnataka? Not necessarily, the answer is apparent in the pattern of campaign that Modi has chosen to undertake. His primary task was to enthuse the cadre to put up a fight in such an overwhelmingly anti-incumbent mood of Karnataka. Therefore, he chose three areas; Bangalore, Mumbai-Karnataka and coastal-Karnataka, which account for 111 assembly segments and where BJP can now put a strong fight. Even if BJP wins half of these seats, there is no chance that Congress will form the next government. In any case, Narendra bhai’s real target was the Lok Sabha polls that will soon follow. By calling for a “Congress mukt Bharat”, he has positioned himself as the clear and natural alternative in the national elections.

» Both Congress and BJP are losing vote-share as compared to last time, while JDS and KJP are gaining at their expense.
» Clearly there is no whitewash of the BJP as many political pundits are predicting and the gap between BJP and Congress is just about 1 per cent.
» Even in 2008, Congress had a 1 per cent lead over BJP and yet had a deficit of 30 seats due to Congress’ spread out vote base as compared to concentrated base of the BJP.
» Congress seems to be suffering due to bad ticket distribution as clearly there seems to be a divide in votes in places where there is a strong rebellion.
» Although a detailed sub-regional analysis will be presented later, BJP seems to be improving in Mumbai-Karnataka, Bangalore and Coastal-Karnataka (where there was a NaMo campaign).
» KJP is emerging as a force to reckon with but is eating into both Congress as well as BJP votes (many strong Congress rebels too are contesting on KJP tickets).
» JDS could possibly be the big gainer of 2013 elections as even a 1 to 2 percentage increase in its vote share leads to a quantum jump in the number of seats as we have seen between 2004 and 2008 – due to highly concentrated vote-share.

good question but a sher should not be scared...Congress will malign him either way....that is the reason he chose the areas of Bangalore district (City speech), Mumbai-Karnataka belt (Belgaum speech) and Coastal Belt (Mangalore speech)

ikkada 111 seats lo if BJP can muster more than 50 then the job is done...vere areas lo oka 10-20 kastapadithe then the tally will reach anywhere between 60-70...JD(S) will automatically gain in this election and then automatically Congress will be denied a simple majority...that is the objective.

He sincerely apologized for what happened in Karnataka (he need not have to!) and raked up the family n bride example to kick congress out...it went down well with the masses....more or less prepping the ground for 2014 LS polls
