Saving 101 starts from "Paying yourself first" - start with this irrespective of what and how do you use the money for investing. It is recommended that Saving is also an expense that should go out of your paycheck, start with one hour per day (example if you make hourly 50$ then, once you get the paycheck every two week then - 50*10=$500 should go to the saving account)

One thing, I can think of is buying gold or any other metal and please note that any investment should be considered in long term (10+ years) and don't worry about temporary ups and downs. Hope that helps.

Physical gold. Not ETF. Asset protection strategy, instead of paper like money, bonds etc. Buy incrementally - spread your investment over a period. Never sell unless you absolutely have to. Take possession of physical gold. Not gold backed ETF's.

Gold has no usage value except the rarity of the metal. Silver on the other hand has many industrial uses.
But the same amount of money can buy you a lot of physical silver and you run into logistical issues at that point.

Bottom line: A stack of gold bars is going to hold value than a stash/wad of cash. Buy physical gold and hold on to it.

Eg: If 8gms of gold can buy you a good suite in 1913, it does the same in 2013 if not better. Lets say you saved that cash in 1913 it may be of minuscule to no value today. I hope you get the point.
