I was on my way from Kondapur to Dilsukhnagar along with a friend. We reached the crossroads at Taj Krishna from where we wanted to head towards Eenadu office

. There was a lot of traffic, so we had to slow down. Soon, we heard incessant honking from a car that was behind us. We couldn't really give way because there was a heavy flow of vehicles. But the honking wouldn't stop. At that point, I didn't even know whose car it was. When there was finally some space to move, the car drove past us and I saw that it had Ram Charan Tej at the wheel and there was a lady beside him. He overtook us, stepped down from his car and began yelling at us. I too got down from my car and tried to explain to him that we were not at fault. But instead of listening to what I was saying, he started hurling abuses at me. He said something like, 'Why are you driving here now, you should be driving at night...!' He made no sense. I tried to reason with him, and asked him why was he abusing me when I was not at fault — after all, I did not stop his car deliberately. But when the abuses and cuss words refused to stop, I too lost my cool and used abusive language.

Immediately, he got inside his car, took it towards the right and stopped it in the middle of the road, right in front of our car. (he basically wanted to keep me there till his men arrived.) I had no place to move. I went towards his car again, and tried to ask him why was he blocking my way, but he refused to roll down his window. I could see him make phone calls.

I went back to the car and waited for a few minutes as I didn't want to get into an argument with him again. Ram Charan didn't budge. soon, there was a huge traffic jam. I told my friend, 'Let's just reverse the car and get out of here, there's no point getting into any more arguments.' But there was no space to reverse either. I got down from the car again and this time, Charan too got down. but even before I could understand what was happening, I saw four men in safari suits run towards me with walkie-talkies in hand. Before I had a chance to react, they started beating me up. I was alone against a bunch of burly men, and I couldn't do anything. They punched me, beat me up and even tore my shirt. Seeing this, my friend ran to my rescue, but

started beating him up too.

I saw Charan standing and watching even as two men escorted him to his car. I ran towards his car and at one point, stood in front of his car. I wanted to ask him why is he doing all this? What was our fault? And why has he stopped his car in the middle of the road bringing the traffic to a complete halt? But on seeing me, he started stepping on the accelerator, threatening to mow me down. I felt helpless. I saw my friend being beaten up so I rushed to help him. After some time, Ram Charan's car zoomed off. Soon, the men who were beating us up stopped as well, and they too left the scene.

Some media personnel had gathered at the site by this time, I told them my side of the story. I was angry because I wasn't at fault and decided to lodge a complaint. We went to the Panjugutta PS, where we were told that the spot of incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Banjara Hills PS. So we headed there.

I went inside the police station with full intention of lodging a complaint. I related the incident to the police and they heard us out. They asked me to give the complaint in writing. By then, I had already started getting calls from my worried family members. They said that nothing would be done to Ram Charan or his bodyguards even if I filed a complaint. I realised that they were right. I am just an ordinary, middle-class, family man and an employee of a private company. Why will anything be done for me? Ram Charan is a star, son of a Union minister and has money and power. I will end up doing the rounds of police stations and courts, but even after that nothing will happen to this case. It will be forgotten. How many old cases involving the common man and celebrities have been resolved in this country? When has action been taken against any celebrity? I had to think of my family and my career. So I decided not to lodge a complaint.

But, I wrote down the entire episode and ended the application with a paragraph that said I did not wish to take this case further. Did the cops dissuade me from filing a complaint? Well, they did ensure that I gave it in writing that I had no complaints against anybody.

Ever since the incident, my phone has not stopped ringing. I even read that some political parties are demanding that a case be registered against Ram Charan. But nobody is understanding, that I am just a middle-class man. I have no power to fight with bigwigs like these. And for the record, I did not apologise to Ram Charan. Why would I? For getting beaten up?

When he was alive, Telugu superstar N.T. Rama Rao was labelled "Drama" Rao by his opponents. Now, a decade after the former Andhra Pradesh chief minister's death, the drama involving his immediate family continues, but is starting to resemble a Shakespearean tragedy.
His son, leading film star Balakrishna, faces charges of attempted murder after he allegedly fired six shots at two visitors at his Jubilee Hills bungalow in Hyderabad on June 3.

A day later, Balakrishna's elder brother Saikrishna, a film producer and distributor, died after being in a coma for over two years. Adding pathos to the drama, NTR's widow, Lakshmi Parvati, carried his ashes to Hardwar to immerse them in the Ganga after preserving them for nine years having vowed that she would only carry out the last rite once NTR's son-in-law and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was voted out of power.

The Balakrishna affair, however, is beginning to read like a B-grade movie script. Initial reports suggested a drunken brawl involving Balakrishna and his two guests, producer Bellamkonda Suresh and astrologer and confidant Satyanarayana Choudhary, who were discussing some outstanding financial issues relating to a film and preparations for the star's birthday on June 10. The argument turned nasty and the actor whipped out a revolver and opened fire, injuring both seriously.

HIGH DRAMA IN HYDERABAD: Balakrishna (left) is said to have shot at Bellamkonda Suresh (above) and Satyanarayana Choudhary and got himself admitted in a hospital to evade arrest
Click here to Enlarge Even if a truce is declared, Balakrishna faces charges of misuse of weapon and att empts to conceal evidence.
After Suresh and Choudhary were rushed to the nearby Apollo Hospital, the actor called an ambulance from Care Hospital, over 5 km away, to take him for emergency treatment. Only then did the police get to know about the shoot-out from the media.
By then, the blood-spattered area had been cleaned and the actor's wife Vasundhara as well as others at home had made a hurried exit after locking up the house which his father had built. But the policeman aged to get the house opened and discovered four bullets embedded in the wall and woodwork, clearly ruling out the possibility of self-defence. They also found a bill for 60 bullets bought earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Balakrishna played the role of his life, feigning serious illness and managed to hold out for about 50 hours even as the police booked him for attempt to murder, flouting the Arms Act and trying to tamper with evidence. Both he and his wife have licensed 32 revolvers but the one that was used was in his wife's name. Not surprisingly, she got herself admitted in Care complaining of depression and exhaustion, apparently to evade possible arrest.

The drama rolled on even after Balakrishna was produced before a magistrate. He pleaded for continued medical attention but this time the judge directed that Balakrishna be admitted to the state run Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). The judge wanted NIMS to certify whether the actor should continue in hospital or be sent to jail. Following a series of tests the hospital announced that the actor was physically fit but needed psychiatric care. It also said that he was not cooperative during the examination.

Evidently, Balakrishna was buying time to avoid the ignominy of going to jail. His lawyers contended that the whole incident was blown out of proportion by the media. The fact that no fingerprints were found on both revolvers (they had obviously been wiped clean) makes it difficult for the police to find out who shot whom. This is crucial because Suresh who earlier said that Balakrishna had fired at him retracted saying he was not aware who shot at him. Even if the victims turn hostile during the trial, Balakrishna still faces charges of misuse of weapon and attempt to conceal evidence.

The actor's latest release Lakshmi Narasimha is said to be the root of all trouble. Suresh and other financial backers had lost money on the film. Balakrishna reportedly blamed Suresh for not ensuring adequate publicity for the movie. One fan had died in the initial stampede for tickets and three others had committed suicide after betting heavily that Lakshmi Narasimha would break all box-office records.

Balakrishna had announced a donation ofRs.5 lakh each to the bereaved families on his birthday. But on that eventful evening, he asked Suresh to pay up. Another sticky issue was Choudhary's astrological advice that was not helping the actor. A third issue was the huge sum to be repaid by Suresh to a financier who had approached Balakrishna to intervene on his behalf.

Whatever the reason the shoot-and-scoot episode has exposed the bizarre way in which the Telugu film industry operates. Producers and actors alike are involved in a game of high stakes that puts a premium on the actor rather than the film. Producers and financiers bank heavily on the top three actors, Chiranjeevi, NTR Junior and Balakrishna.
Money changes hands even before the cameras roll. Film rights are sold well in advance and there is a race to see which film sets records. Most often the pre-release hype doesn't match the box-office performance. Yet actors charge exorbitant rates and fuel this race by promoting their fan associations. In such a system both producers and financiers are given short shrift.

In Balakrishna's case, the failings of the system took their toll. With the evidence piling up and the pressure from supporters of Telugu filmdom's first family, there could be plenty of twists and turns in the plot before the curtain comes down.
