cherlapalli_jailer Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 MUMBAI: An analysis of the Karnataka elections reveals that 92 members of the legislative assembly (MLA) have been re-elected in the just concluded elections this week. The average assets of these MLAs have grown by 72% or Rs 12.62 crore in the five year period between 2008 and 2013 reveals an analysis by the Karnataka Election Watch. As per the affidavits submitted by these 92 MLAs to the election commission, their average assets during the 2008 elections stood at Rs 17.53 crore. This has swelled to Rs 30.15 crore in 2013. The analysis pegged the average asset per MLA in the state to 23.54 crore, a hike of over 135% since the last election. The highest growth in the five year period was reported by D. K. Shivakumar of the Indian National Congress from the Kanakapura Constituency who delcated an increase of Rs 175.9 crore Only three MLAs have shown a decline in assets. The figures are staggering with 93% of the 218 MLAs whose assets were analysed falling in the crorepati bracket with only three MLAs declaring assets less than 50 lakhs. It is essential that the source of this increase in assets be further probed
