Subramanian Swamy was born in [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mylapore"]Mylapore[/url], [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chennai,_India"]Chennai, India[/url]. His father Sitaram Subramanian is from [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madurai"]Madurai, Tamil Nadu[/url] who was an Indian Statistical Service [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Services_of_India"]officer[/url] and retired as Director of the Central Statistical Institute.[/size][/font][/color][color=#000000][font=sans-serif][size=3]
He attended [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_College,_University_of_Delhi"]Hindu College, University of Delhi[/url], from where he earned his Bachelor Honours degree in Mathematics. He studied for his Masters degree in Statistics at the [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Statistical_Institute"]Indian Statistical Institute[/url]. He then went to study at [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_University"]Harvard University[/url] on a full Rockefeller scholarship. He received a [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Philosophy"]Ph.D.[/url] in Economics in 1965. His thesis adviser was [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_Laureate"]Nobel Laureate[/url] [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Kuznets"]Simon Kuznets[/url].[/size][/font][/color][color=#000000][font=sans-serif][size=3]
For some time, while completing his dissertation in 1963, he worked at the [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Secretariat"]United Nations Secretariat[/url] in New York as an Assistant Economics Affairs Officer. He subsequently worked as a resident tutor at [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowell_House"]Lowell House[/url] at Harvard university.[/size][/font][/color]
