Narendra Modi Could Tilt The Scales For Bjp With 220 Seats

[size=5]The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is sunk.

And so is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), unless it projects Narendra Modi as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
An India Today Group-CVoter National Opinion Poll has predicted that the UPA is set to lose 95 seats from its 2009 tally of 227 in next year's Lok Sabha elections, ending up with just 132 seats.

[color=#ff0000][size=6]The big story of the poll is the Modi effect, polarising the vote to benefit both the BJP and Congress. Nightmare scenario for Regional parties and third front. For the BJP-led NDA, the writing is on the wall: without Modi it stands to add 27 seats to its 2009 tally of 152; with Modi as prime ministerial candidate the gain is projected at 41 seats.[/size][/color]

For the UPA, Modi isn't all bad news. The opinion poll suggests that projecting Modi as the NDA's prime ministerial candidate will also be helpful to the UPA, giving it 23 more seats to take its Lok Sabha strength to 155.

The UPA's loss, however, will not translate to big gains for the NDA if Modi is not named leader. The real winner in this war between two big alliances seems to be an alternative front of regional parties, which command strong presence in states.

This amalgamation stands to get 232 seats, a gain of 68, if the Modi factor is not in play. In the Modi-as-NDA-leader scenario, however, the alternative front stands to lose 64 seats and come down to 168.

This opinion poll is the first to weigh the impact of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the fortunes of the main alliances in 2014.
The survey was conducted to gauge public opinion on the completion of nine years of the Manmohan Singh government at the Centre. [/size]
[size=1][size=5]Headlines Today-CVoter conducted the poll between March and May 2013 among 1.2 lakh randomly selected people from 540 Lok Sabha segments. [/size][size=6]In Bihar, where the BJP-JD(U) alliance is being tested by Modi's ambitions, the Nitish Kumar-led party could be cut to half its present Lok Sabha strength if it dumps the NDA. [color=#ff0000][size=6]If the BJP and the JD(U) continue to be friends, the alliance would retain its hold over Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's party is likely to win 19 seats and its ally BJP 11 in that case. For the BJP, Bihar seems a win-win more situation as it is projected to get 18 seats on its own if it goes to battle behind Modi and without the JD(U).[/size][/color]
