No. 8: Janet Napolitano

Napolitano leads the third-largest department in the federal government, overseeing a budget of $48 billion, a staff of 240,000 and 22 agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Secret Service. Her department is also charged with keeping the nation safe from cyberattacks, which Napolitano has said are the fastest-growing threat to the country.
Napolitano describes her leadership style as "keep(ing) your eye on the long-term vision, while dealing with the crisis du jour."

No. 7: Christine Lagarde

5 of 12To full screen

Power source: Managing director, International Monetary Fund
The first woman to run the 188-country financial organization spent much of her first two years on the job battling the debt crisis in Europe and calling for ailing global economies to accelerate growth stabilization. Lagarde's calls for debt-sharing among European Union nations and for an increase in rescue funds have faced resistance from fellow power woman Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany. French-born Lagarde was a labor and antitrust attorney in the United States before serving a six-year stint as France's finance minister. Tongues are wagging that she may make a run for the French presidency.

No. 6: Sheryl Sandberg

Power source: Director and chief operating officer at Facebook
Facebook's (FB) chief operating officer sparked a conversation on feminism in the workplace with the March release of her book "Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead," which sold nearly 150,000 copies in its first week and has since has held the top nonfiction spot on some best-seller lists.
One of Sandberg's bigger on-the-job successes has been her role in helping bring advertisers to Facebook's mobile news feed. The company earned more U.S. mobile revenue than any other publisher in 2012, with an 18.4% share of the entire market.
Facebook shares are down 32% since the company went public in an initial public offering, on May 18, 2012

No. 5: Hillary Clinton

Power source: Former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state
The whole world is watching. Will Hillary Clinton run for president of the United States?
Now a private citizen after stepping down from her position as secretary of state on Feb. 1, Clinton is widely expected to vie for her party's nomination in the 2016 presidential election. Among Democrats, 65% say they'll vote Team Hillary, while another poll has her beating the two current Republican forerunners. Her only speed bump now is the Benghazi controversy.
Ready for Hillary, a super PAC that was launched last month, quickly garnered 150,000 Facebook likes, more than 60,000 Twitter followers and financial contributions from more than 1,000 donors.

No. 4: Michelle Obama

Power source: First lady of the United States
The Harvard graduate and former corporate attorney (and husband Barack Obama's boss) uses her platform as first lady to fight childhood obesity and promote healthier eating and lifestyles. With 67% of Americans viewing the first lady in a positive light, she's more popular than her husband by far (47%), likely because she spends more time appearing on TV than running the country. This year alone, she has appeared on the shows hosted by Katie Couric and Jimmy Fallon and announced the best picture winner for the 2013 Academy Awards.
At a keynote address in March, she reflected, "It wasn't that long ago that I was juggling a demanding job with two small children and a husband who traveled."

No. 3: Melinda Gates

Power source: Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
The primary goals for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation this year are to eradicate polio worldwide by 2018 and to get modern contraceptives to an additional 120 million women by 2020. The foundation has committed $140 million annually to these causes. In 2012, emphasis was placed on devising tools for quantifying the success of initiatives as governments increasingly look for proof of the efficacy of the programs they pay for.
The Gates Foundation gave away $3.4 billion last year, the vast majority to global health programs; it has made more than $26 billion in grant commitments since its founding in 2000. (Microsoft publishes MSN Money.)

No. 2: Dilma Rousseff

Power source: President of Brazil
Now at the midpoint of her first term, the former revolutionary sits atop South America's largest country and the world's seventh-largest national economy, with a gross domestic product of $2.4 trillion. Rousseff hs taken on the task of pulling the country out of its slowest two years of growth in more than a decade. Her emphasis on entrepreneurship has inspired a new generation of startups, but many criticize the leader for favoring pro-development policies over more humanitarian concerns.

No. 1: Angela Merkel

Power source: Chancellor of Germany
Merkel retains the top spot in Forbes' annual ranking of the world's most powerful women. It's the eighth time in 10 years that the German chancellor has led the list.
Merkel provides the backbone to the 27-member European Union and carries the fate of the euro on her shoulders. Her hardline austerity prescription for easing the European debt crisis has been challenged by hard-hit nations in southern Europe, as well as more affluent countries in the north. Most outspoken in opposition has been French President François Hollande.
Merkel has served as Germany's chancellor since 2005, when she became the first woman elected to the position. She's running for a third term in general elections this fall.
