Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day,” is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, but organized women's groups in the South were decorating the graves of their loved ones before the end of the American Civil War. “Decoration Day” officially became Memorial Day on May 5, 1868 by order of General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial Day is now celebrated every year on the last Monday in May.

The Memorial Day “Red Poppy” tradition was inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields” by Major John McCrae, a Canadian military surgeon who saw horrific fighting on the Western Front near France during World War I. Regrettably, Major McCrae was killed in action in 1918. His poem reads:

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In 1915, inspired by Major McCrae’s somber poem, Miss Mona Michael, added a verse:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

Miss Michael then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and she sold poppies to her friends and co-workers. Miss Michael donated all the money she received to widows, war-orphaned children, and to servicemen and servicewomen in need. Shortly before Memorial Day in 1922, the VFW became the first veterans' organization to adopt the red poppy tradition. Two years later – and to this very day -- their “Buddy Poppy Program” continues to sell artificial poppies made by disabled veterans with all proceeds benefiting disabled military veterans and veterans in need. You will very likely see veterans offering little, red, artificial poppies this weekend – at traffic lights or just outside your local grocery store. If so inclined, please consider making a donation and wearing a red poppy in honor of those who have served.

So, as you cook-out, swim, picnic, catch a ball game and otherwise celebrate the “unofficial” start of summer this coming Monday, if only for a moment, please remember the important reason we take this Monday off each May. And never forget all those that served and gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

Please note that at 3pm Monday is the “National Moment of Remembrance” for all to pause for a moment of silence and informally pay respect for all of those who have died in our nations service. In our current culture it is easy to forget that many sacrificed to afford us the liberties that we so generously take advantage of today. Whether you were born a US citizen or migrated here later in life I think we can all attest to the freedoms that this great country has afforded us all and that those before us helped create.

This weekend I will make a donation to the American Legion and Disabled Veterans of America in your honor. Please trust that I will wear my little red poppy with great pride.
