You are in wrong forum to seek advice...Its Phd........It takes minimum 5 years.....If you go to top schools then most of the daytime would go for work..........So if you are to decided then....follow below steps...

1. find a cool prof and cool uni....(not necessarily top school).
2. find a girl and marry just before you start Phd...(mostly u get a girl in ap and that too through relatives)
3. so start Phd life and married life simulataneously..
4. Always be positive and get mingle with others to seek advice..(never do anything alone.....always do in a team)..

I known people doing interdisciplinary in collaboration b/w math and eng and stats.
They are working as research associates now. You wont get good money so prepared for that...

thats not always true. Changes with each and every individual. 2+3 (MS+PhD) is the standard.

Just to get finish 2 chapters, it will take 2.5 years....Then qualifiers, other 2 chapters, some publications, data presentation, committee defense etc..might atleast take 1.5 years....so total 4 years thats what many profs will have in mind if a student start the project from scratch....if you find a place in the established project of prof, then as you said can finish 3 years...Any way am not going to argue......Those are my observations... They ain't gonna help you.....good luck _-_

[/quote]aa chapters godava ento naaku nijanga artham kaaledhu....You can take qualifiers after 1.5 yrs. and you can defend research by 2.5 yrs and last sem writing, publishing and post doc search or job search. Planned and plan of study approved and executing right now! but, i have my own idea and got my funding. i dont know how that would make any difference in time coz, usually phd admissions are given only if there is a research interest match and immediate project/funding availability. Its not bad to give an argument as long it doesn't run out of line.
