It is with a heavy heart, I record the passing away of a Brave Soldier – Col MD Naidu, VrC – a Veteran of the 1965 War and the 1971 War. Col MD Naidu, VrC, was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery on 27 Sep1963.
During the 1965 War, when Bravo Coy of 6 DOGRA Bn was launched to attack a Pakistani post, Capt MD Naidu was FOO accompanying Bravo Coy. Unfortunately, midway, in the course of the attack, Coy Cdr of Bravo Coy got killed on account of enemy fire. Capt MD Naidu, the FOO, undaunted, rallied the men of Bravo Coy and pressed home the attack. While leading Bravo Coy in action and in its final assault on the enemy, Capt MD Naidu got shot and sustained three bullet injuries in his abdomen. Yet, in utter disregard to his personal safety, Capt MD Naidu courageously led Bravo Coy in battle, annihilating the Pakistanis and capturing the post Gittian, in the face of stiff resistance. Immediately thereafter, he was tasked to provide Artillery fire for 1 Para who were tasked to capture the Hajipir pass. Despite being grievously injured, by a burst of 3 MMG bullets , he refused to be evacuated & secured a vantage position & continued to direct effective fire on the enemy positions till he fainted. For display of exceptional courage & bravery in the face of the enemy, Capt MD Naidu of 1642 Field Battery was bestowed the Veer Chakra (VrC) by Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, His Excellency, the President of India.
After the War, the CO 6 DOGRA Bn bestowed a rare honour on Capt MD Naidu, VrC, by naming the Bravo Coy as Naidu Coy. And to this day, the Bravo Coy continues to be known as NAIDU Coy.
Col MD Naidu, VrC, a soldier of great humility, passed away in the afternoon of Sunday, 2 June 2013 at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife (Dr Mrs MS Naidu) and his two sons – Veteran Major Dhirendra Naidu and Shailendra Naidu and grieving friends & relatives. May Col MD Naidu’s soul rest in PEACE; and may the Lord grant Dr Mrs MS Naidu and her family the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away.
