I am sure there will be desi guys who has hotels, they might help you try to go to that city a day or two days before your job starts and search around that town

If you are looking for an apt near the university try to look at Waldorf apts, Kimbrough apts. I did my masters there. Desi population used to be good but now gradually decreasing (last two years). Lot of desi families are ther but few number of students now. Two desi restaurants, just average food. Nearest cities- St Louis and Kansas City- plenty of Indian restaurants and grocery shops- both are 3 hrs distance. If you live near the university, you can share the apt and its very cheap cost of living. Decent town with less desi population. Until two years back, it was really good to live there. We used to conduct cricket tournaments also with atleast 8-10 teams. But now ITS DRY.... to say this. Good luck.
