Within the hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, Brahma is the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the destroyer. Nevertheless, Brahma grew in a lotus out of the navel of the sleeping Vishnu. The daily alternation of light and dark is attributed to the activity of Brahma. Brahma's mind born sons are the seers Marici, Atri, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratuj, Pracetas, Vashishta, Bhrgu and Narada. From Brahma's body came his nine sons Daksa, Dharma, Kama, Anger, Greed, Delusion (Maya), Lust, Joy, Death and Bharata and one daughter called Angaja. In order to create the world and produce the human race, Brahma made a goddess out of himself. One half was woman and the other half was man. Brahma called the woman Gayatri, but she also became known by many other names such as Saraswati. Brahma has four heads, but used to have five. The four extra heads appeared when Gayatri was very ashamed with Brahma's love for her and tried to escape from his gaze. The tremendous tapas that Brahma had practiced for the purpose of creation was entirely annihilated through his desire to unite with his daughter. One head was lost later when Brahma lied to Vishnu and thus caused Shiva to become very angry. The four Veda's are said to have sprung from his heads. In the Life of Ganga, Brahma advised Bhagiratha to ask the help of Shiva in containing the power of Ganga (goddess of the Ganges river).

Lord Brahma bore seven sons who were great sages. Vedic wisdom passed down through the lineages of these sages as an oral teaching and was later put into writing. Parashara belonged to the line of Angiras and wrote a treatise called Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. This ancient treatise, written more than 5000 years ago, forms the backbone of Vedic Astrology today.

why lord brahma is not as widely worshiped as Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva

There are few theories for this:

  1.
Lord Brahma is the creator - so his job is done - Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are the protectors of the universe and hence people worship Vishnu and Shiva.

2- Lord Brahma created Shatputra ( a female diety). He was absolutely fascinated by her beauty…He spent all his time gazing at her. Lord Shiva felt that this was improper -Lord Brahma created Shatputra and hence Shatputra can be considered his child - being obsessed with one’s child this way is improper - And hence Lord Shiva cursed Brahma that no one will ever worship him due to his unholy behavior.

3- Brahmarishi Bhrigu was a highly regarded saint. He was planning to perform a great yagna. He wanted all Gods and Goddesses to attend the yagna - so he visits their abodes and invites them. When he visits Lord Brahma, he finds Brahma totally immersed in the music played by Saraswati. He calls out Brahma’s name numerous times but there is no response from Lord Brahma. So he curses Lord Brahma that no one will ever worship him.

4-One day Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma were taking a stroll in Heaven. They came across a huge tunnel of light which was in the shape of a pillar. The tunnel seemed really huge and big. This made Brahma and Vishnu very curious. They wanted to find out where the tunnel started from and where it ended. So Vishnu enters the tunnel from one end and Brahma from the other. Vishnu was unable to find the beginning and the end and so disappointed he comes out of the tunnel and admits he was unsuccessful. Lord Brahma also was not successful but he lies and says he was able to find the end and the beginning. He could not admit failure and hence he lied. Immediately the pillar of light turns into Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is furious that Brahma lied and so curses him that no one will ever worship him again.

One might not understand how God can be cursed….Well this happens quite a few times in the Hindu religion - In Hinduism Gods are actually teaching us the way of life by using their own lives as an example. They are telling us what is right and what is wrong by using their lives as an example. Also another important observation here is about ‘ego’. Brahma is the creator of the universe. When we are talking about his ego we are also talking about the ego of all his creations. He let his ego come in the way of truth and as a result was cursed by Lord Shiva. Though our ego comes in the way of admitting failure, it is important we don’t succumb to this ego. By being egoistic we achieve nothing
