Since whatsapp works on wifi/3g and not on phone network, if it is installed on ur phone and give frnds phone no while activating, it will send the verification code to ur frnds mobile. If u could somehome get that verification code from frnd and confirm it on ur phone, then both u n ur frnd will have the same whats app msgs.... But now as far as I know this issue has been rectified by Whatsapp.
