If there is big difference than contact a lawyer for advise or meet the collection agent and settle/bargain starting at $1000 and they will settle at around $1500 But you should be stiff and don't be afraid if they speak in threatening manner (don't be scare if they use words like legal action, court, criminal records, credit etc) If the collection agency is adamant, just stick to words and say that you are not in a good financial postion .(come up with hardships like you lost jobs ..etc) and even tell that you are also planning to file for bankruptcy ! They will inturn beg you for settling..but they will not 'bend' on first conversation.. 1
