SAO PAULO, Brazil—A soccer match in a remote city in northern Brazil ended with a double homicide a week ago, after the game's referee allegedly stabbed one of the players to death and was then beaten to death and torn to pieces by the player's friends, police in Santa Ines said Friday.
The referee, 20-year-old Otavio Cantanhede, ejected player Josemir de Abreu, 31, from the field during a match on Sunday, June 30, and Mr. Abreu responded by kicking Mr. Cantanhede, according to police inspector Deidny Pereira of the seventh region civil police brigade in Santa Ines, in the northern state of Maranhao.
Inspector Pereira said a fight broke out between the two, ending with Mr. Cantanhede stabbing Mr. de Abreu, who died en route to the hospital.
Mr. de Abreu's enraged friends then attacked the referee, tying him down and beating him to death with rocks and sticks, with the attackers then tearing off Mr. Cantanhede's arms, legs and head with the help of a sickle, according to the police inspector.
Mr. Cantanhede's severed head was found on a stake near the field, police said. Inspector Pereira said [email="o"]o[/email]ne man, Luis Moraes de Souza, 26, had been arrested for the crime. It wasn't immediately clear if Mr. Moraes de Souza was being represented by a lawyer and if so, who that might be. "He was the instigator of the attack," Officer Pereira said.
Some residents of the city, in the interior of the state, video recorded the events, and police were using the recordings to try to identify more suspects, Mr. Pereira said. "We have copies of the recording," he confirmed.
Maranhao, on Brazil's northeast coast, is one of the poorest states in the country and as recently as the 1980s was also one of the least violent, according to justice ministry figures. The murder rate rose almost ninefold from 1980 to 2010, from 2.7 killings per 100,000 inhabitants to 22.5 murders as drug- and weapons-trafficking spread through the state.
