Updates On Raghunandan Yandamuri, Case

Three motions filed this week in Montgomery County Court suggest some of the arguments defense attorneys will make in the case of a man charged with killing a baby and her grandmother last year at the King of Prussia apartment complex where they all lived. The charges against Raghunandan Yandamuri, 27, include two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and kidnapping for ransom. The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office is seeking the death penalty in the case. According to the prosecutors, Raghunandan Yandamuri on Oct. 22 entered a unit at the Marquis apartment complex on West Dekalb Pike, where Satyavathi Venna, 61, was babysitting her 10-month-old granddaughter, Saanvi Venna. Yandamuri allegedly intended to kidnap the baby for ransom. According to police, Yandamuri fatally stabbed the grandmother when she tried to protect Saanvi. After the assault, he allegedly took the baby, gagged her, and put her in a large blue suitcase. The baby was found dead Oct. 26. One motion wants all of the evidence, including a taped confession, to be barred from being used at trial because authorities gained it "unlawfully." The request, officially called a "pretrial omnibus motion," said Yandamuri was seized on Oct. 25 by a Montgomery County detective and an Upper Merion Township detective "without a warrant and without probable cause." Police illegally took his cellphone, he was not allowed to call his wife or anyone else, and he was not read his Miranda rights immediately before making statements to police, the motion contends. He was coerced into other actions, including allowing police to do a DNA test swab on him, and "acknowledging the creation of a one-page ransom note," and consenting to searches of his phone, vehicle, apartment, laptop computer, and a flash drive. The omnibus motion also asks for a continuance of the trial, which is scheduled to begin Sept. 9, and a change of venue. The continuance is based on defense attorneys Stephen G. Heckman and Henry S. Hilles III needing more time to prepare for the trial, including sending a member of the defense team to India - the defendant is an Indian citizen - this summer to conduct interviews and collect documents. The change of venue request was based on extensive coverage of the deaths in the Philadelphia region and elsewhere. Another motion dealt with some of the circumstances the District Attorney's Office said exists in the case, which make seeking the death penalty appropriate. The other motion asks that the court bar the death penalty in this case. First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele said Wednesday that the office would file a response. Yandamuri is being held without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

Not that easy in US bro
