jamesbond Posted July 26, 2013 Report Posted July 26, 2013 WASHINGTON: Another dodgy US university that attracted hundreds of Indian students who wanted a fasttrack route to America has been shut down. The [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/University-of-Northern-Virginia"]University of Northern Virginia[/url], which functioned out of four classrooms in the basement of an office building in a Washington DC suburb, has been asked to cease its operations after the [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/State-Council-of-Higher-Education"]State Council of Higher Education[/url] for Virginia revoked its certificate. The school is said to have about 500 students, many of them from Andhra Pradesh, India. Some of them transferred here from Tri-Valley University, another bogus university in California, that was shut down by immigration authorities in 2011 for alleged visa fraud. Both universities had dubious credentials and were widely seen as rackets set up by immigrant entrepreneurs of Chinese and Korean origin. They used Indian recruiters to attract students from India by circumventing and loosely interpreting US laws. The institutions helped applicants obtain legitimate student visas to come to the US. Most students were reportedly aware of this but still signed up. Dozens such unaccredited or shadily accredited universities have sprung up in the US over the past decade after it transpired that education is a big business, and a possible shortcut to emigrating to America. The university had been under scrutiny for several months after it emerged it used a model similar to Tri-Valley to lure foreign students , without proper accreditation, curriculum, or faculty. It failed repeated audits and became something of a joke after its owner once advertised for "attractive submissive" to live in his basement dungeon "complete with bondage racks." The July 17 cease and desist letter orders it to turn over a list of all students, their visa status, financial records and the location of their transcripts.
