He became famous for undertaking a [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasting#Political_fasting_and_hunger_strikes"]hunger strike[/url] in support of the formation of an Indian state for the Telugu-speaking population , he lost his life in the process. His death sparked public rioting, and Indian prime minister [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jawaharlal_Nehru"]Jawaharlal Nehru[/url] declared the intent to form [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andhra_State"]Andhra State[/url] three days following.

Infact Andhra State was declared a week before he died....but andhra leaders inisisted him to continue the fast till they achieve madras city .
