[/quote] actually our everycell is made up of 23'PAIRS' of chromosomes... i.e., 46 chromosomes(DIPLOID)... but in case of GERMCELL or otherwise called the sex cells, both male(SPERM) and female(OVUM) have only 23 chromosomes... it is due to the particular type of cell division called as MEIOSIS... in this cell division, the total of 46 chromosomes are divided into half the number i.e., 23 chromosomes(HAPLOID) in the germ cells... so all the egg cells or ovum of the females and also the sperms of males will have 22+1=23 chromosomes... in females, 22+X Chromosomes are present in their ova... in males, 22+X or 22+Y chromosomes are present in their sperms... if 22+X(23 CHROMOSOMES) of sperm and 22+X(23 CHROMOSOMES) of ovum are fused, it give rise to a female zygote and develop into a baby GIRL if 22+Y(23 CHROMOSOMES) of sperm and 22+X(23 CHROMOSOMES) of ovum are fused, it give rise to a male zygote and develops into a BOY baby.
