There isn’t a straight answer. Each one has its own advantage. Since most people here knows the way xoom.com works, I will spend more time in explaining xe.com transfer process.
To utilize xe.com both you and the beneficiary in India should have bank accounts. Let’s break down the process of money transfer to India in to 2 phases - you paying the money to xe.com (1[sup]st[/sup] phase), and xe.com converting and sending the money to your beneficiary’s bank account in India (2[sup]nd[/sup] phase). xe.com (a service of Western Union) has 3 money sending options.

[b]How is conversion rate calculated in xe.com?[/b]
Xe.com is a trading account which means that the exchange rate changes every 30-40 sec (I estimated it from the time it takes to refresh the xe.com page). The moment you click the transfer now button (in other words initializing transaction on your account page) your exchange rate will be locked. Even though the later processing time is as listed in the table above, your exchange rate gets locked at this moment.

[b]How can I know my exchange rate for that day? [/b]
You cannot view the exact rate until you log-in in to your account. The higher the amount you transfer the better will be the exchange rate.

[b]In general, how can I know the exchange rate estimate?[/b]
When you get on to [url="http://www.xe.com"]www.xe.com[/url], the center of the homepage has a title “XE Live Exchange Rates” with rates listed. If you look at the bottom of this table there is a tag “Mid-market rates:”. Below this table you have a title “XE currency convertor”. Both the homepage rate table and XE currency convertor will list the same price at that moment. These prices change frequently depending on the market (as I mentioned above). Once again both these prices are not the exchange rate you get but “Mid-market rates”. Your actual exchange rate will be scaled down by 1-1.5% of this “Mid-market rate”. The higher the amount you send the less will be the scale down percentage.

[b]Does it mean that if I send huge amounts my actual exchange rate will be my Mid-market rate?[/b]
No. Once again whatever amount you send, your actual exchange rate will be scaled down by 1-1.5% of your “Mid-market rates”. In other words, you can never get the “Mid-market rate” as your actual exchange rate. So if you send huge amounts the actual exchange rate will be scaled down by 1% at minimum and if you send small amounts the actual exchange rate will be scaled down by 1.5% at maximum.

[b]What are the advantages I see in xe.xom over xoom.xom?[/b][list]
[*]Unlimited transfer of money at once. Unlike in xoom.com, you can send huge amounts at once in xe.com. So in a case where you want to send high amounts, xoom.com may ask you for additional documents delaying the process. I agree xe.com takes time to transfer money where as xoom.com after submitting documents will transfer within 4hrs but xe.com is saving you from the pain.
[*]Xoom.com gives you an exchange rate depending on the closing price of the market for the previous day where as xe.com prices change every moment and if you understand trading market you can make a right call as to when you can lock your actual exchange rate for transfer.

For example, at this moment xoom.com exchange rate is 66.01INR where as xe.com “Mid-market rate” says 68.8298. So even after scaling down the “Mid-market rate” you can an actual exchange rate more than xoom.com. If you were attentive, the “mid-market rate” today went to as high as 69.1 in which case if you were sending money today you must have been benefited.
Also, xe.com has a bidding service, where you can say that lock in the exchange rate when the price reaches certain amount so that you don't need to be in front of your system each minute.

[b]Conclusion/Endorsement:[/b]
I cannot endorse a particular service. Each service had its advantages. It all boils down to your need on that day. Xe.xom may be beneficial if the rupee value is crashing but can be a loss if the rupee value is gaining. So, do the math, at that moment of money transfer, to see which one will be more beneficial. During your calculations, don’t forget to consider the $22 flat service charge by xe.com. If you need to send huge amounts without the pain of sending small amounts multiple times, it is always better to have an xe.com trading account.
