[color=#000000][font=Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]The Union Government of India on 19 August 2013 banned duty-free import of flat screen televisions by people who travel through air. This move came after the Rupees fell below 63 levels against the US Dollar. [/font][/color]

[color=#000000][font=Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]The Government issued a notification according to which the import of flat panel (LCD/LED/Plasma) televisions as part of free baggage allowance would be disallowed with effect from 26 August 2013. As of now, air travellers were allowed to bring the flat-panel televisions as part of their baggage. From 26 August 2013 onwards, the travellers will have to pay the customs duty on these TVs. [color=#000000][font=Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]It is important to note that for containing the Current Account Deficit (CAD) as well as for arresting the rupee depreciation, the Government increased the duty on platinum, silver and gold to 10 percent. The Union Finance Minister, in the meanwhile, also explained that in order to compress the import of non-essential goods, certain other steps would also be taken. [/font][/color]

Government should first control doling out freebies keeping elections in mind.

Indian government if the largest importer of cooking oil in the world and loosing abt 10 billion dollars a year....why not encourage farmers to grow more oil producing crops such as palm oil trees by giving in subsidies and i am sure in abt 3 years the import of cooking oil will drastically fall and will save huge forex for india.

Similarily, why can't india encourage setting up of electronic chip industries just as in china, taiwan, and thailand...Each year indian spend abt 8 billion dollars in import the cellphones, Tv's and so on...

The Indian government doesn't have any vision....all it sees the people of india as vote banks and indulge in social expenditure which would not be sustainable if the economy takes a beating and we will fall behind another 10 years with rest of the world.....There is a great example of china which has lifted over 50 crore people out of poverty by taking up large scale reforms of Deng Xiaoping's policies ..... it was possible because of large sclae setting up of manufacturing industries..

I was astonished to find out how india is spending on lot of things (some of these things are really unnneccessary) which are imported to india and I believe these can easily be grown and manufactured in india like:

Products Imports(in crores)

cellphones 40,000
Tv's 4,000
Almonds 1,500
Cashewnuts 5,000
locks 3,000
razors 1,500
Deodrants 1,000
chocolates 175

I don't have figures for softdrinks like coke n pepsi....but i am sure those would make another 20,000 cr

All the above things can be easily be made in india and thus saving lot of forex and creating lot of jobs unlike in It sector.

All I hope is some sense prevails in current government and take steps to reduce the imports and helping the CAD.
