i dont know if u got ur answer yet, but i had faced similar scenario. here is what i did

i just got my i-797 extended but my i-94 kind of expired as i went outside the country during my extn and on my POE it was issued(electronic) for my current visa end date. i have scheduled an appointment with CBP I-94 deferred inspection site where they will renew ur I-94 if u can produce the current valid I-797 extn doc and ur passport(valid) and they will issue the new i-94 with validity upto 797 end date or passport validity end date (which ever is earlier, as i had mine for passport end date which is expiring soon).

so u can get u r I-94 renewed with in USA and get ur DL renewed.

PA lo anni original documents teesukellali..nenu kuda H1 extension approve ayyaka next day license renewal ki velthe alage chesaru.
I94 update kaaledu so malli rammannaru. 1 week aagi velthe renew chesaru.

If you cannot get I 94 , you need to go to nearest airport (mostly port of entry) and get it corrected. The main reason for this is wrong entry of details at port of entry.They will check your I 797 and other documents Correct and issue new I 94. They work from 8 AM to 12 PM

If you already have I 94 from the above website  and DMV cannot verify . They will issue temporary license and will verify I 94 with Homeland security and will give you call once the license is ready . It shouldn't take more than 3 or 4 days.
