The journey of a Star Kid to Super Stardom
Long before the audience began going gaga over Mahesh Babu’s looks and his films, there was a young boy who was determined to follow the footsteps of his father. His transformation from a star kid to a superstar is almost like a movie script itself.
Flashback : 30 Years Ago…
Growing up in a film family has its perks and when Krishna, one of the biggest stars of his era, is your father, then it’s like getting a free pass to Disneyland. Perhaps it was his father’s influence or zeal to do something on his own, Mahesh Babu didn’t have a problem in choosing his career. Almost every year, Krishna ended up shooting in a hill station like Ooty and his entire family would drop by to spend the summer with him. At the age of four, he made his debut as a child artist in Dasari Narayana Rao’s Needa, which had his elder brother Ramesh Babu in a lead role. The film released in 1979 and four years later, when Mahesh Babu acted in Kodi Ramakrishna’s Poratam and after watching the preview, producer Dhoondy, a close aide of Krishna, reportedly told the latter that one day, Mahesh Babu will become a big star. We don’t know what made him think so, but his prediction turned out to be quite true. After acting in Koduku Diddina Kapuram (1989), Anna Thammudu and Bala Chandrudu, Mahesh Babu took a nine year break before he made his full-fledged debut as a hero.
Act I : The Beginning

As much as we would like to believe that it’s been a bed of roses for Mahesh Babu, the truth is quite the opposite. Telugu film industry saw the influx of third generation of actors in the late 90s and Mahesh Babu was expected to be the flag bearer of his father’s legacy. However, the hullaballoo surrounding his first big project Rajakumarudu, directed by K Raghavendra Rao, was quickly replaced by lukewarm response to his next two films – Yuvaraju and Vamsi. A lot of big names were attached with almost all his projects in the first four years and the actor didn’t seem to be in a mood to play safe. Two romantic films aside, he acted in a cowboy flick Takkari Donga, an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet (Bobby) and in between all this came Murari, where he played the role of a pampered young man.
Style : With the exception of Takkari Donga, the rest of the film projected him as a handsome young man, which explains the genesis of the moniker – ‘Milk Boy’. The styling was minimalistic at best.
Comedy : Having begun his career with love stories with a dash of action, there was nothing much to look forward to in terms of comedy. Murari was the only noticeable film in this period which had him try something out of his way.
Action : Takkari Donga was an audacious attempt with several risky stunts and Mahesh Babu did a good job at it. Again, it wasn’t the most interesting of the phases in terms of action in his career.
Dialogue : It took Mahesh Babu several years before he could deliver dialogues with an attitude and a voice to die for. We aren’t sure if he really believed in the films that he did, but he had a long way to go before people took him very seriously.
Act II – 1. The Rise of a Hero

Between 2003 and 2006, Mahesh Babu acted in six films which cemented his place in Telugu cinema as one of the most exciting talents to watch out for. It all began with Okkadu and by the time Pokiri turned out to be a smash hit, he seemed like an unstoppable force eager to prove a point. Among the six films, except Naani, the rest of them had him play serious roles and that sort of became his signature style for the longest time. Naani, an adaptation of Tom Hanks starrer Big, was an experimental film which failed to click at box-office, but he left a huge impression on critics and the audience with his performance in Teja’s Nijam. This era was also the most satisfying in his career so far with films like Okkadu, Athadu and Pokiri to his credit.
Style : This era had Mahesh Babu wearing predominantly a lot of plain shirts, sporting a rugged look in Arjun, Okkadu and Pokiri. Nothing inspiring, but he had the charisma to carry off a simple look.
Comedy : Pokiri was an exceptional film in his career, especially in terms of infusing a lot of wit and sarcasm in his dialogues. It also broke the mould of Athadu which had Mahesh Babu play an assassin’s role and gave him a distinct voice.
Action : Okkadu, Pokiri and to an extent even Arjun and Nijam had Mahesh Babu flexing his muscles. On the other hand, we have Athadu which had a lot of stylized action sequences that are still talked about among movie aficionados. All this was a far cry from all that he had done in the beginning of his career and in those three years, he proved what he was capable of doing.
Dialogue : Compared to what he did in the first four years, we had a completely new Mahesh Babu in this phase, in terms of how he says his dialogues. Full credit to the directors he worked with for spotting his strength and moulding him accordingly. Finally, he had a style of his own.
Act II – 2. The Fall and Transformation

Soon after Pokiri released, everyone thought that there was no looking back for Mahesh Babu. After all, he had just delivered the biggest hit ever in Telugu cinema’s history; however, what followed could only pale in comparison to India-Sri Lanka Semi-final in 1996 World Cup. Both Sainikudu and Athidhi failed to make a mark and Mahesh Babu took a long break to spend time with his family. Not the best of times that one would want to remember after tasting success, but it certainly did a whole lot of good to his career in subsequent years.
Style : After Okkadu, Mahesh Babu once again teamed up with Gunasekhar for Sainikudu. The film had him playing a student leader and his styling was once again quite minimalistic. However, for his next film Athidi, directed by Surender Reddy, he tried his best to up the style quotient and even hired a Mumbai based hair stylist. The film hardly made an impression and after a week, it fizzled out.
Comedy : Neither Sainikudu nor Athadu gave him scope to display his comic timing and we don’t blame him for that.
Action : Both the film had plenty of action sequences but the tacky CGI in Sainikudu and gruesome action sequences in Athidi didn’t quite make an impression. The less said about the action choreography, the better it is.
Dialogue : Athidi was another intense film in Mahesh Babu’s career, which had him play an orphan who’s desperate to avenge the death of a couple. On the other hand, Sainikudu had a great premise for several inspiring dialogues, but the film was so bad that it didn’t really matter.
Act III : The Birth of a Superstar

After a three year hiatus, Mahesh Babu finally came back on to silver screen in 2010 with Khaleja. Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, the film was an antithesis to his onscreen persona and the transformation is nothing sort of magical. Everything about him had changed, right from his looks to dialogue delivery and more importantly his comic timing. It was almost as if Trivikram Srinivas had unleashed a beast which had been lying dormant for years. The film release amidst sky high expectations and the subsequent result will continue to be a million dollar question. Mahesh Babu followed it up with three back to back hits – Dookudu, Businessman and Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu.
Style : Full credit to Namrata, Mahesh Babu’s wife, for transforming him into a style icon. He ditched all the simplistic style, which had become his trademark and right from his hairstyle to the contours of his face, Khaleja marked the beginning of a new Mahesh Babu. Dookudu reaffirmed his Superstar status and carried off everything with great panache.
Comedy : Khaleja is easily the funniest film in Mahesh Babu’s career and his impeccable comic timing in the film was a delight to watch onscreen. In Dookudu, Mahesh Babu-MS Narayana-Brahmanandam had everyone in splits and earlier this year, he brought back that charm once again to his role in Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu.
Action : Khaleja, Dookudu and Businessman reinvented Mahesh Babu’s image as an action hero. In Khaleja, the stunt sequence shot at a petrol bunk had a Trivikram’s trademark whereas Dookudu had him changing his style during the action sequences.
Dialogue : With the exception of Pokiri, there have hardly been instances where Mahesh Babu had a chance to deliver whacky one liners which became a pop-cultural phenomena. But the star today is quite different from the one in the 2000s. Irrespective of the genre and the slang, he pulls off everything with ease.
Keeping aside the debate about who the numero uno star in Telugu film industry is, there’s a reason why Mahesh Babu has become one of the biggest stars in contemporary Telugu Cinema. Look beyond his looks, there’s an intense actor who’s eager to fit into every character he plays and that’s been one trait which has remained consistent throughout his filmography. He’ll soon be seen in Sukumar’s upcoming film 1 – Neenokkadine. If this teaser is anything to go by, then we are certain that he is constantly trying to push his boundaries. That is a true hallmark of a superstar.
