exports is not the problem.

This is a simple case of good local governance. City based mayor councils are under the political influence of CM, and unable to issue bonds to develop their own infra in India. All infra development in Indian cities are done by the govt, which means there will always be short of money, and have to beg central and state govts for projects to develop their city infra.

why can't people directly elect mayors, like US presidential style, who then works with local councilors. This happens only in chennai, although the result is not very different because the mayor still has no powers to issue bonds unilaterally. It's a good idea to pursue if they are empowered to act on their own financially.

Very few cities have issued infra bonds in the past in India. Also because interest rates are high, cities will require special taxing powers to pay back those bonds. These kind of infra doesn't come cheap, even for China or US, or anywhere in the world.

Even if India stops exporting, our local economy is good enough to sustain us for years to come. we need is good governance though, and a fair taxation system. The investment in our economy will be more than enough to cancel our import bill.
