Congress Hurries Telangana Formation

Despite bitter opposition from Seemandhra leaders, the Congress high command is learnt to have decided to fast-track bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Though the process has been slowed down for now because of the ongoing agitation in Seemandhra as well as the party’s preoccupation with the Food Security Bill, a top leader of the State Congress said, 10, Janpath wants to expedite it after the ongoing Parliament session.

“Our high command believes the agitation in Seemandhra will lose steam very soon as the movement is unorganised,” he told Express.

According to sources, the party central leadership is planning to hasten the formalities much in the same way it had taken the decision to divide the State last month by holding meetings of the core group and the working committee with remarkable speed. The T-note is likely to be submitted to the Union Cabinet tentatively in the first week of September. After that, the remaining Constitutional process such as sending the note to the President, referring it to the State Assembly and introducing the bill in Parliament will follow. The Assembly may be convened anytime after the second week of September. Later, the Centre will decide whether to hold a special session of Parliament to table the bill, sources revealed.

A senior minister from Seemandhra, who was in Delhi on Wednesday, admitted to Express, “After observing the mood of our Delhi bosses, we are convinced that our high command is hell-bent on dividing AP. We hope that through pressure building tactics, we could at least delay the process and prevent formation of a T-state at least until the elections.” Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy too is learnt to have failed in extracting any assurance from Sonia Gandhi on slowing down the process even after pleading with her to reconsider her decision.
