Sidhu...Sidhaarth Roy Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 Still grappling with a season of incursions by Pakistan and China in Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh, the Indian Army now has to deal with the Myanmar Army after it intruded into Manipur. Headlines Today can confirm that the Ministries of Home Affairs, Defence and External Affairs are aware of the intrusion and at various stages of dealing with it. The intrusion took place around 5 km from Moreh Police Station in Chandel district of Manipur's. The area falls under the 9 Assam Rifles unit, which reports to the home ministry. The fresh territorial problems arise from a 10-km border fence on the Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel district. According to Indian Army sources, Myanmar Army's 87 Light Infantry was found laying groundwork for a platoon base camp in Holenphai, a frontier village that Myanmar claims is within their territory. Holenphie village is located around 100 km south-east of Manipur capital Imphal. Last week, village chief Lalkholun Haokip was on an inspection round in the area when he chanced upon Myanmar Army's preparations. The Myanmar Army soldiers they saw working in the area refused to answer their questions and asked the Indians to contact their seniors. The following day, an IAS officer from the area, Robert Kshetrimayum, conducted a spot inspection. The Commanding Officer of the Myanmar Army's 87 Light Infantry met with Indian officials but refused to stop the work claiming two things: the territory they were building the platoon base on was Myanmar's and the instructions to build the camp had come from higher authorities and therefore it was not a local level decision that could be negotiated. Official sources say the Myanmarese Commanding Officer also showed the Indian officials a detailed Myanmar map which depicted Holenphai village falling within neighbouring country's territory. The nub of the fresh territorial problems arises from a 10-km border fence on the Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel district. Sources indicate that the 87 Light Infantry of the Myanmar Army and the 9 Assam Rifles are in touch over the issue, though construction work has apparently not ceased at the village. A senior Army official from the Kolkata-based Eastern Command said the dispute on the border village arose after the disappearance of three pillars demarcating the boundary between India and Myanmar. However, he said the issue had been amicably resolved after a post-level meeting between the Myanmar and Indian Army near the village on August 26. "The Myanmar Army agreed to stopped construction on their post and have ceased forest clearance activities," he said. "We have very cordial relations with them all along the border." Post level meetings are conducted on a regular basis between colonels or their second-in-commands of both armies.
