Who said Ongole is parched?

Ongole would need more than 5 tmc ft of drinking water if it becomes the capital, as the population of the city is expected to grow from the present four lakh to 25 lakh over 10 years. This could be achieved by utilizing water from Gundlakamma, Musi and Paleru rivers whose basin is Ongole, said experts. Two reservoirs, each with a storage capacity of 1.5 tmc ft, could be built across Musi and Paleru, said retired engineer-in-chief T Hanumantha Rao.

Another 2 tmc ft of water can be drawn by building a dam across the Gundlakamma river, across which an irrigation dam with a utilization capacity of 12.8 tmc ft was recently constructed near Maddipadu. These reservoirs are located within 20 km of the city and thus there would be no scarcity of drinking water, said Rao.
"A large amount of water yield is available in the Musi and Paleru rivers. We can have reservoirs across these rivers flowing towards the south of Ongole, while a medium-sized dam can be built across Gundlakamma, which is at the north of the city. I see no problem whatsoever as far as drinking water is concerned," said Rao.
At present, the 4 lakh people of Ongole are being provided water from a surface tank and with the river water not being utilized an estimated 10 tmc ft is going waste as the rivers join the sea just 6 km from the town. This, too, could be used if needed.

Rao said 10-15 tmc ft of water can also be drawn during emergency from the dead storage of Nagrajunasagar through the Addanki Branch Canal. There is also the possibility of drawing water from the Pulichintala project.
Mamidi Bharath Bhushan, a surface water expert, also belied fears of water in Ongole being fluorinated, saying that there is no fluorine content in the surface water as the region has red soil. "It is wrong to say the underground water in Ongole is fluorinated. As it consists of red soil, the water in the soil is fluorine-free. So, water in the dug wells is not fluorinated," Bhushan said.

"Only when you dig beyond 50 ft to install a tubewell will you find a rocky zone where the water is fluorinated," he said. "The red soil is good for deep percolation of rainwater and the water table can be easily charged by rainwater harvesting methods. Even the storm water drain would be good because of the red soil," Bhushan said.
A great advantage of Ongole being the capital is the availability of vast tracts of government land, according to Ananth Maringanti, an expert in town planning. With more than 80,000 acres of government land vacant in and around Ongole, Ananth felt a well-planned city could be built. When Chhattisgarh was carved out of Bihar, its capital Raipur had more than 20,000 acres of available government land.

Ananth said the southwest part of Ongole was best suited for a greenfield capital as most of the vacant land is located there. Towards the north is the Gundlakamma ayacut and towards east there is fertile land that could be used for agriculture. As the south is heavily populated, experts felt the new city must go beyond it
