Gold-Rich Temples Say No To Rbi

Gold-rich temples of India have declined the offer by RBI to put their stocks of yellow metal in the market to help cut down imports.

Tirumala Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, Sree Padmanabhaswamy and Sree Guruvayoor temples in Kerala have said no to RBI request. Around 20,000 tonnes of gold are within India and held by the public and temples. This is valued at $1000 billion. If a fraction of it is offloaded in the market, it could do miracles to the current account deficit and the rupee.

The temple with huge gold deposits is Tirupati run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam which has Rs 70,000 crore worth yellow metal as jewellery, coins and gold bars. It has 493,702 kg jewellery converted into gold bars weighing 338 kgs and deposited it in IOB. This was done in December.

Every month from the hundi, it gets around 100 kg gold and 120 kg silver. SBI has 2275 kg and IOB has 1353 kg of gold deposits from Tirupati temple. The temple gets 1.61% interest every five years. If reports are true, the treasure chamber of the Sree Padnambhaswamy temple in Trivandrum is worth Rs 1 lakh crore. These are gold, idols, precious stones and artefacts that were collected by the generation of the Travancore royal family through waging war on small kingdoms.

Inventory check is going on,conducted by a panel appointed by the Supreme Court. The inventory would be finished by December 31. The temple authorities are non-committal about the offer from RBI.

The Krishna Guruvayoor temple has 500 kg gold bars in SBI Mumbai and 100 kg is inside the temple used for daily rituals. It has decided not to offload the stock in the market as it would hurt the sentiments of devotees.

The Sabarimala Ayyappan temple in Kerala has 15 kg gold which is kept in the temple strong room. The earnings are around Rs 105 crore.

Sidddhi Vinayak Ganapati temple in Mumbai too decided not to offload their gold in the market.
