juvenile Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 NDTV 4* TIMES OF INDIA 3* India Today 4* Let's not get carried away. Every time a remake comes along, we get gooey-eyed and nostalgic about the original. The Zanjeer remake gets it right. Dead right. Unlike Ram Gopal Varma's remake of Sholay, which was purely misguided, and Karan Malhotra'sAgneepath, which was unnecessarily brutal, Zanjeer is just what a remake should be. It's respectful to the original material which, let me hasten to add, was no masterpiece, and suspiciously similar to a 1967 film called Death Rides A Horse. Providentially, Lakhia's Zanjeer is neither slavishly reverent to the original material nor does it take off into weird wild and wacky tangents -- like the Rohit Shetty's recent remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee'sGolmaal. Rather, the new Zanjeer opens up the original plot, weeds out the humbug and preserves the core of the revenge saga of an angry cop whose ire grows progressively higher as the plot moves through a series of cleverly conceived conflicts that accentuate his alienation from his khaki-coloured line of duty. No one can do to the sullen cop's role what Mr Bachchan did. But yes, even in his new avatar, Inspector Vijay Khanna seethes, simmers and boils over with an indignant rage. Everything about the festering rotten 'system' makes him annoyed and churlish. Since Zanjeer, and its more serious-toned country-cousin Ardh Satya, numerous cops have vented their cinematic spleen in films as far-ranging in quality as Singham and Policegiri. What makes Vijay Khanna in the new Zanjeer special is the plot-mechanics which put him in time-worn situations, but subject him to dramatic dynamics that give the prototypical Angry Cop a renewed riveting life of violent score-settling. That this time the Angry Cop, who was played with such compelling candidness by Amitabh Bachchan in the original Zanjeer, is played by Ram Charan Teja is just a huge stroke of luck for the remake. Ram Charan brings in an entirely unique brand of silent satyagraha to his character. When we first see him on screen, he wallops a goonda-politician on a busy road of Hyderabad as a hoarding of Ram Charan's father Chiranjeevi's film looks down on the chaotic scene. A version of Raghupati raghav... plays in the background as Ram Charan lets us know without wasting time, that he means business. The pace from that hard-hitting moment is relentless. The momentum never slackens even when Vijay Khanna gets down to expressing tender thoughts for the fast-talking befuddled and disoriented NRI girl Mala. Playing Mala, Priyanka Chopra seems to have a whole lot of infectious fun. She spells joie de vivre and looks gorgeous. Priyanka is the comic relief in this fast-paced actioner where fists and the background point out an ominous warning. Lakhia paces the proceedings as a rush-hour traffic of bustling events. No one has the luxury to stop and think as the narration gathers up a storm of pulpy conflicts building up to an exceptionally staged climax filmed amidst the volatile proceedings of a crowded Moharram event. From the Ganpati Viasarjan to the Moharram, Lakhia's interpretation of Zanjeer traverses a mammoth canvas of rapid-fire images. Gururaj Jois's camera moves dexterously, but never to divert our attention from the central conflict. And Chintan Gandhi's dialogues use one-liners judiciously, never over-doing the smart-alec retorts. The film's action, by Javed-Ejaz, feels and looks right. The attention paid to getting the action sequences right is highly commendable. There is an elaborately staged multiple-explosion sequence in a huge Dharavi-like slum which belongs to a Vin Diesel-starrer. Sanjay Dutt steps splendidly into Pran's part. His sequences, though limited by the actor's physical unavailability, show the sensitive side to his aggressive personality. The bonding between Ram Charan and Dutt comes across as effectively as the one between Ram Charan and Priyanka and Prakash Raj and Mahie Gill. And the momentum never slackens. Fast-paced, and forever furious, Zanjeer also finds space to be excruciatingly funny. In fact, the whole villain-vamp equation between Teja (Prakash Raj) and Mona Darling (Mahie Gill) is here subverted to a kind of comic coitus interruptus where Prakash Raj repeatedly keeps talking about sex without getting down to it while 'Mona' Mahie Gill purrs and moans and pouts -- not out of passion but for just the opposite reasons. The most tongue-in-cheek homage I've seen in a remake occurs in this film when we see the new Teja-Mona pair watching actor Ajit and Bindu in the original Zanjeer on a DVD. The sequence is irreverent without appearing to belittle the original. It reminds us of the renewed cycle of art and individual talent. Throughout the film, we sense the director's immense affection for the original Zanjeer, a reverence that never clouds his judgement. This is one remake that stands tall and lithe. It is manned by a manful supply of action and yet manages to keep the machismo understated. Breakneck-paced, adrenaline-pumping, pulse-pounding -- Lakhia's deconstructed version of the Prakash Mehra film is a full-on pacy paisa-vasool entertainer with brio and balls. Ram Charan Teja makes an impressive Bollywood debut. We can safely say he is the man among the boys. Go for it!
juvenile Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 Story: An upright cop sees himself transferred innumerable times in five years. Will he succumb to the pressures of the administration or will he make his voice heard above the din? Review: Apoorva Lakhia's Zanjeer has many similarities to its four-decade old namesake Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer (1973) that breathed fire and brimstone. The original film earned Amitabh Bachchan the epithet 'angry young man' and made him world-famous. The 2013 action thriller brings Andhra icon Chiranjeevi's son, Ram Charan (also an Andhra superstar) to Bollywood. It retains the key plot points and the main characters are rechristened Vijay (Ram Charan), Mala ( Priyanka Chopra), Sher Khan (Sanjay Dutt), Teja (Prakash Raj) and Mona (Mahie Gill) just like the original. Yet, this film should be judged as a stand-alone offering because attempts to compare the two versions will find the current one falling short, especially in the dialogue and music departments. Nostalgia happens when some original dialogue like 'Yeh police station hai, tere baap ka ghar nahi' and 'Sher Khan beimaani ka dhanda bhi imaandari se karta hai' are uttered. To reprise the plot, Zanjeer is the story of an idealistic cop, Vijay Khanna, wanting to bring criminals to the book. Set in Andhra Pradesh, the initial part sets the stage for how dons and ministers have more clout with and within the administration, than an honest policeman. As a result, Vijay is transferred 17 times within AP. In his 18th assignment in Mumbai, this Assistant Commissioner of Police takes on an oil mafia don, Teja (Prakash Raj). Teja fails to strike fear, playing something between Al Capone (Untouchables) and a buffoon. Anyway, whistleblowers are set on fire and uninhibited killings happen on Mumbai streets, making it seem as if the entire khaki force (except Vijay) is asleep. The climax, shot against the backdrop of a Moharramprocession, is interesting. Ram Charan, as the brooding policeman, excels in action. His dark eyes with long lashes adeptly convey anger. Sanjay Dutt is competent and lovable. Priyanka looks smashing but is overzealous in the American Born Desi Gujarati Girl act. Mahie Gill as the gangster's girl Mona is raunchy.

ariel Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Zanjeer, a remake of the 1973 Amitabh Bachchan-starrer, is the latest offering from Apoorva Lakhia and is a modern retelling of the crime-infested underbelly of Mumbai. It’s a bad time for Mumbai as petrol, oil prices and adulteration are on the rise. Villain Teja has been up to no good, and honest as the day is long, ACP Vijay Khanna, who’s recently transferred from Andhra Pradesh to Mumbai is a man on a mission to set things right. Bollywood crazy NRI Mala witnesses a murder that Vijay is investigating and gets caught up in this cop-mafia war. Also helping Vijay in this mission are Sher Khan and crime reporter Jay Dev. Apparently the plot has been inspired from real life incidents involving the oil mafia and the assassination of a journalist but has the director been able to do justice to this or the remake? The look of Zanjeer is highly stylized and replete with punches, glass-shattering and fiery explosions across grimy locations. The present day narration has, no doubt, a more glamorous backdrop, wining-dining in expensive restaurants and some typical Hindi film item numbers and pyromania that is trending in action films these days. Action by Javed-Aejaz is high octane and stylish. While Apoorva Lakhia may have overhauled the original and given this one a whole new look he has sadly not been able to do it justice. There is little else to expect, except for action and some power-packed reworking of a classic to draw the audiences in. So don’t go in expecting another classic. Southern superstar Ram Charan makes his Hindi film debut, donning the uniform and the scowl of the iconic Angry Young Man. Walking in the footsteps of a legend seems a tall order though it would be unfair to judge the actor’s talent by comparison. Suffice to say that though he has a flair for action and dancing, there's nothing else showcased from his end. Sanjay Dutt is earnest in his reprisal of Pran’s memorable portrayal of Sher Khan. Priyanka Chopra plays Jaya Bachchan’s Mala, but is too over-the-top and grates on your nerves. A heavy lidded Mahie Gill is a letdown. Where Bindu had bought a certain class to Mona, Mahie succeeds only exuding over exaggerated sexuality. One can't even compare Prakash Raj as Teja to Ajit, but he does what he can. Atul Kulkarni is sincere in his efforts as crime reporter Jay Dev. If you want to watch a movie replete with random sequences that has dialogue like “Cats and chicks are meow and you can't have enough of both” and “India mein sher aur dost dono ki kami hai. Ek doctor kam bhi ho jaye toh koi farak nahi padeega”, then please go and waste two hours of your time. Zanjeer gets 1.5 stars from us.
