he called so he can save his family from the cases that'll follow because of his drug business.

He wantedly threatened his wife so that police who hear will think that it was only him that built that business and his wife had nothing to do with it. Also his son, will not blame his mom anymore, given how ruthlessly he was talking to his wife.

Whatever he said on the phone was to save his family, and thats why he had to stop his tears and sound very direct on the phone.

The only thing that was left to do, was to disappear (through Saul Goodman's contacts), which is what he did at the end of the episode. He sacrifices himself at the end for the sake of his family. May be something changes after he's gone and he's forced to come back and deal with it. We'll have to see.
