Manohar Parrikar is a team player: in his interview to me last week, the Goa CM backed Narendra Modi to the hilt as the BJP's top leader. "A national mood is forming," he said, "to install BJP in power and Modi as PM." But media chose to play up his matter-of-fact comment on the 2002 Gujarat riots as a "blot on Modi's career."

As it dawns on the media that a Modi-less BJP-led government is an eminently possible outcome of the 2014 elections, naturally the focus will shift to a suitable BJP replacement. In Manohar Parrikar, the party may have the ace of spades: but have they even noticed it?

Parrikar's great asset is that he broadens the BJP's voter range. Writer Shobha De, by no means a natural votary of the Hindu right, urged the BJP to nominate Parrikar as their prime ministerial candidate. "It will find countless takers across India," she tweeted, "He's 57. Global. Smart."

Why should the BJP care for De's opinion? Because democratic politics is the art of persuasion, not of anger and revisionism, as most Modi fans think it is. It's also maths: every persuaded swing voter counts for two votes (Congress loses one, BJP gains one). That the proud RSS man Parrikar appeals to India's biggest vote bank — liberal Hindus — also makes him a potential successor to AB Vajpayee's legacy (though Parrikar demurs at the comparison). Since Vajpayee in 1999, the BJP has struggled to get support from these crucial voters, who also make up a large section of the intelligentsia.

A survivor in Goa's fractured and unpredictable politics, Parrikar has to handle the diverse aspirations and cultural moorings of his cabinet colleagues — a key requirement to lead a coalition government in Delhi. His biggest achievement has been rescuing Goa's economy from a potentially crippling crisis: the Supreme Court's mining ban last year has hit a quarter of the state's revenues and population. Parrikar has tackled the crisis by minimising leakages in state funds and by cutting down on government expenditure. He has led the austerity drive by example: the CM's office uses only two cars, including his own; he switches off lights and air conditioners himself when he leaves the room, an aide told me.

I want DB folks to put their views on Manohar Parrikar as compared to Narendra Modi. Personally i respect this person and he is the first ever IITian to rule a Indian state and he brought Goa out of a bad economy and a person with integrity with statesmanship. One of BJP's admired leaders with simplicity.

Parikar may not be able to stand against the shrewd congress and its attacks..... nevertheless, I knew about him, saw him once in Goa airport... a very very humble person and the leader we deserve

Maybe you are right. He might be new to Congress's cunning tactics. Modi might deal with Iron hand.

Anyone in BJP other than LK Advani, Sushma, AnanthKumar is ok for me.

The dirty Congress tactics like MSDP, CVB, LAB, RTE can't be allowed to go on for long without resulting in another partition in India.

True i used to followup Advani long back but now he is just a liability on BJP and the young leaders forward.
