I would recommend a fresher to start with UNIX. Once you get a hang of it, you can then move towards Admin of other applications (like database admin, middleware admin, Informatica Admin etc)

Most of the softwares in the IT world are installed on the UNIX family operating systems only. If you have command over UNIX, then you will find it easy to switch to any technology in the market.

These days UNIX family of OS is necessary for databases, Middleware, all the back end related work.

There are 4 parts to UNIX:
1. Learning to navigate around the folders and directories and using commands
2. Learning the shell scripting (Perl etc). One needs to have good command over Vi Editor to come up with scripts.
3. Trouble shooting
4. Upgradation of Server from one version to another.

You don't need to be a hardcore programmer to be a UNIX admin. All you need to do is practice the commands that are widely used in UNIX. Once you get familiar with these things, you will find it very easy than any other IT job.

I personally feel UNIX is more apt for people who are coming from Non-IT background because they don't need to come with a logic to develop the code. All they have to do is mug up the commands.
