How Long Term Should We Think ?

Just want to start a discussion about career progress.

Sometimes I really wonder how long term should we think to achieve our goals as a developer.

Does a voluntary Open source work to add value to our knowledge and long term skills helps ?
Or some kind freelance projects that drains time, money as well as energy ?
Or learning some serious data structures for a month to become overnight amazon heros ?
Or choosing completely non-mainstream stuff to make a difference to the world ?

Should we think about family circumstances once we overcome the basic needs to satisfy others ?
If we really want to sacrifice our time instead of ordinary things that people feel compulsive, how viable it is ?
