This so called concept is called Single Sign on and now a days another concept is getting into world i.e OAuth which lets client applications access user resources with out sharing password . For example, Mint can get the bank details of the user with out accessing user credentials by asking for oauth token from banks. But Mint is not doing so, it is storing bank passwords on their secure system. So beware when giving access to third party applications.
