govt is planning to shut down all the consulates......... my attoney just saying that All US Consulates are likely to go for shutdown, be prepared not to plan for india for vacation, since i need to go for stamping

[b] UPDATE: Understanding Immigration and Travel Consequences in the Case of a Government Shutdown[/b]

To date, government agencies have not provided an official response regarding contingency plans due to the possibility of a government shutdown on or after October 1, 2013. It is reasonable to believe, however, agency plans in development in the event of a government shutdown next week will mirror plans developed in anticipation of a government shutdown in 2011. Below are previous agency responses to the possibility of a government shutdown, which are believed to be similar to the course of action each agency might take in the event of a shutdown next week:

[b]USCIS[/b]: With the exception of the E-Verify program, USCIS will likely maintain operations if the government does shut down.

[b]DOS[/b]: If there is a shutdown, the only visa processing will be for "life or death" emergencies. In prior budget-related shutdowns, DOS has continued to provide diplomatic visas and has been inclined to take the stance that "a really, really important business meeting is not life or death."

[b]CBP[/b]: Inspection and law enforcement are considered "essential personnel," though staffing may be more limited than usual. The borders will be open, but it is unclear how the shutdown will affect the processing of applications filed at the border.

[b]EOIR[/b]: As with other agencies, personnel who are not considered "essential" will likely be furloughed. EOIR has previously indicated that the detained docket would likely be considered an essential function and would therefore be able to continue in operation.

[b]DOL[/b]: It is probable that OFLC would cease processing all applications in the event of a government shutdown. If there is a shutdown, DOL personnel likely will not be available to respond to e-mail or other inquiries.
