Future unclear for Andhra engineering colleges

Many colleges are likely to be closed as more than 100,000 seats are lying vacant across the state

Only 126,084 of about 237,000 so-called convenor quota seats (directly administered by the government) in the state’s engineering colleges were filled in the first phase of counselling, potentially leaving more than 100,000 seats vacant. [background=transparent][background=transparent]Hyderabad/Bangalore: At least a dozen engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh are close to shutting down and some may even put themselves up for sale, with more than 100,000 engineering seats across the state lying vacant.[/background]
[background=transparent]State education and college officials say a number of second-rung engineering institutes in Andhra are operating at far less than half their capacity, as students opt for the sciences or humanities in lieu of the four-year course once considered a gateway to high-paying software jobs.[/background]
[background=transparent]Such colleges include the likes of BVR Institute of Engineering and Technology in Tuljarampet, Safa Engineering College in Kurnool, and PVKK Institute of Technology in Anantapur, the officials and experts said.[/background]
[background=transparent]Mint contacted these and at least a dozen other institutes such as Asifia College of Engineering and Technology, Shirdi Sai Institute of Science and Engineering, and Aryabhata Institute of Technology and Science that confirmed they were able to fill only a few seats—much less than 50%, in some cases the figure was lower than 20%—during the first phase of the counselling process held early in September for admissions to engineering schools.[/background]
[background=transparent]Engineering as a course may be losing its sheen because of the slower hiring this year at software companies, which is where many of these students head to after completing the four-year course. India trains 1.5 million engineers every year, according to an April research report by [background=transparent]Kotak[/background] Institutional Equities. But only about 150,000 of them will get jobs in the information technology (IT) sector this fiscal year, industry lobby Nasscom has estimated.[/background]
[background=transparent]Of the 714 engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh, 400 colleges admitted fewer than 100 students, and 13 had zero admissions following the first phase of counselling, said [background=transparent]K. Raghunath[/background], camp officer of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education that conducts admissions. “Several seats have been left (unfilled) in both urban and rural colleges,” he said.[/background]
[background=transparent]Only 126,084 of about 237,000 so-called convenor quota seats (directly administered by the government) in the state’s engineering colleges were filled in the first phase of counselling, potentially leaving more than 100,000 seats vacant, Raghunath said. Andhra has a total of 338,000 engineering seats.[/background]
[background=transparent]About 218,693 students qualified in the entrance examination this year, but many chose not to take up admission in engineering colleges. Last year, 98,218 engineering seats in the state were vacant, higher than the 76,310 vacant seats in 2011 and 40,273 in 2010.[/background]
[background=transparent]Engineering and medical college aspirants who top the state’s common admissions test sit through counselling sessions with education officers that determine what courses they can take. The sessions are held in three phases that will end in October.[/background]
[background=transparent]For long, an engineering course was the fad in Andhra—as in several other states but even more so here, earning Andhra Pradesh the distinction of having the highest number of engineering colleges and seats in the country. The successes of the state’s engineers in the IT sector, especially in the US, further fuelled the desire of middle-class families to send their children to engineering schools.[/background]
[background=transparent]To be sure, the problem of unfilled engineering college seats isn’t exclusive to Andhra Pradesh. According to a July report in The Hindu newspaper, nearly 80,000 out of about 200,000 engineering college seats are vacant in Tamil Nadu. In Karnataka, the figure has touched about 20,000 seats, according to people familiar with the development who requested anonymity.[/background]
[background=transparent]“In Andhra Pradesh, the number of (engineering) colleges is more and students are less,” said [background=transparent]S.H. Rajendra Prasad[/background], secretary of Sri Sai College of Engineering and Technology (SSCET), Anantapur. The college, which can take in 300 students a year, hasn’t been able to admit a single student yet for the coming academic year, its principal M. Ramakrishna said. The college has only 190 students in all.[/background]
[background=transparent]For a college to survive and break even, a minimum of 50% of its total capacity has to be filled up, experts tracking the sector say.[/background]
[background=transparent]“It has always been assumed in this business that each college would succeed. That was an assumption that was always going to be challenged,” said [background=transparent]Narendar Pani[/background], a professor at the School of Social Sciences at the National Institute of Advanced Studies.[/background]
[background=transparent]“The number of engineering seats has increased enormously disproportionate to the number of students available,” said [background=transparent]P. Sanjeeva Rayudu[/background], principal of BIT Institute of Technology in Anantapur, which is currently operating at 50-60% of its overall capacity.[/background]
[background=transparent]Meanwhile, unable to run the institutions, some college managements are considering either getting out of the business or converting their campuses into educational hubs including schools. The management of SSCET, for example, is evaluating options to sell the institution to a “big education group” that could build an integrated institute complete with hostel facility. “We have to run the college for two more years” until the present batch of students graduate, Prasad said.[/background][/background]
