Two amateur radio operators — experts who have rendered their services in several disasters in the country and abroad over the years — are rushing to Odisha.

In Odisha, as many as 200 trained ham radio operators have been put on alert to rise to the occasion. Ham radio operators help in rescue operations when other means of communications may or may not be working. "Ham volunteers not only in Odisha, but all over the country have been asked to be available if their services are needed. As many as 40 have already volunteers have offered to go to any place if needed," NIAR director S Ram Mohan told The Times of India.

For now VU2JOS Jose Jacob and VU2MCW Mukesh Kumar Gola will reach Odisha by Saturday. "Since the training for the ham operators in Odisha has been given over the years, the job would mainly be to see that there are no technical glitches," Ram Mohan said.

The amateur radio operators from NIAR had helped the Odisha government in critical times when the state was hit by the super cyclone in 1999. Even when the chief minister's residence was without power supply and all telecommunications had got cut, ham radio operators came to the rescue helping the state be in contact with the outside world.

Following the help that was rendered the government took steps to get as many as 200 ham radio operators trained so that they can be depended upon for communication during rescue operations.

Following the alert about Cyclone Phailin, the Odisha state government got in touch with NIAR, Hyderabad to alert the entire network of ham radio operators and participate in the operations that may have to be taken up. "We have eight stations which have been put on active alert while there are 28 stations which are there as back-up at various places in the country," Ram Mohan said.

Usually during a disaster, Ham radio operators who pitch tent at different places share information over the radio so that rescue operations can be carried out.

"Right now, our concentration is on Pradip Port. The amateur radio network is being activated to be of assistance at the right place if the cyclone hits the area," Ram Mohan said.

(CNN) -- Preparations are under way on India's east coast ahead of Saturday's expected landfall of a massive cyclone now gathering strength in the Bay of Bengal.
Tropical Cyclone Phailin is expected to make landfall somewhere near the border of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh states in India.
The cyclone, which is packing sustained winds of 155 mph (about 250 kph), with gusts of up to 190 mph, could hit densely populated areas that are vulnerable to flooding.
Roughly 80,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas in the region, with many leaving on foot or by bicycle, said Kamal Lochan Mishra, the Odisha Disaster Management Authority deputy general. Evacuations are continuing, he said.
Some fear a repeat of what happened on October 29, 1999, when Cyclone 05B, also known as the Odisha Cyclone, made landfall in the same area, causing the loss of more than 10,000 lives.
The strongest tropical cyclone recorded in the Bay of Bengal, it packed winds of 155 mph at landfall and caused more than $2 billion in damage.
Phailin may be less intense than that at landfall and is likely to weaken as it moves on shore, but will still bring storm surges and dump heavy rainfall on inland areas in its path.
The India Meteorological Department warns that Phailin is a "very severe cyclonic storm" and urges the evacuation of coastal areas.
The storm will bring gale-force winds and a storm surge that may reach about 10 feet (3 meters) above the usual tide level and could inundate low-lying areas of the Odisha's Ganjam, Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts and the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh during landfall, it said.

Do not delay and run the risk of being marooned
 If your house is securely built on high ground take shelter in the safer part of the house.
However, if asked to evacuate do not hesitate to leave the place.
 Board up glass windows or put storm shutters in place.
 Provide strong suitable support for outside doors.
 If you do not have wooden boards handy, paste paper strips on glasses to prevent splinters.
However, this may not avoid breaking windows.
 Get extra food, which can be eaten without cooking. Store extra drinking water in suitably
covered vessels.
 If you are to evacuate the house move your valuable articles to upper floors to minimize
flood damage.
 Have hurricane lantern, torches or other emergency lights in working conditions and keep
them handy.
 Small and loose things, which can fly in strong winds, should be stored safely in a room.
 Be sure that a window and door can be opened only on the side opposite to the one facing
the wind.
 Make provision for children and adults requiring special diets.
 If the centre of the cyclone is passing directly over your house there will be a lull in the wind
and rain lasting for half and hour or so. During this time do not go out; because
immediately after that very strong winds will blow from the opposite direction.
 Switch off electrical mains in your house.
 Remain calm.

As of Friday night, EDT, Super Cyclonic Storm Phailin (02B) is an extremely dangerous storm with sustained winds of 140 knots (160 mph). Wind gusts are approaching 200 mph. It is expected to maintain this intensity until landfall in the Indian states of of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh Saturday morning EDT.
Phailin has the intensity of a Category 5 hurricane. Satellite imagery of Phailin remains very impressive symmetrical convection wrapped around a small, distinct eye. The storm has an established outflow on all sides. This venting allows more intense convection to fire near the center. Phailin has the "classic" look of a well defined tropical system.
Specifically, landfall is expected between the cities Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar, with Brahmapur, possibly taking a direct hit. Again, the affects in these areas will be catastrophic. A storm surge of 15-20 feet is expected near the point of landfall, as well as winds over 150 mph.
It will weaken rapidly after landfall, but heavy rain will cause flooding well inland through the weekend into early next. Widespread rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are expected, but there will be some places that easily see more than 15 inches.
Elsewhere across the Indian Ocean, there are no concerns for tropical development over the next several days.
