[size=3][color=#2E2F2F][font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Miraculous survival in the sea, 18 fishermen caught in cyclone Phailin swim to coast Jajati Karan, Paradip/Paradip: Amid the tales of devastation caused by cyclone Phailin is a story of a miraculous survival. 18 fishermen who were stranded in deep sea off the coast of Paradeep when cyclone Phailin struck swam their way against the tide and survived. These fishermen had gone to the high seas in two trawlers off the Paradeep coast and ran out of fuel when they changed course to avoid the cyclone. They were stranded 5 miles from the coast and called the coast guard for help, but even 48 hours after they were struck no help could reach them due to the high tides in the sea.. "We sent message to the coast guard to at least send us fuel. But no help came," a fisherman who survived said. After their trawler was wrecked by cyclone Phailin on October 12, they jumped to the sea and floated with the help of empty fuel containers and gas cylinders. After swimming for almost ten hours, all 18 sailors miraculously reached the coast with only 3 of them sustaining injuries. However, questions are being raised on the Paradeep coast guard's efforts as they are specially equipped and trained to rescue in such situations. The rescue teams though defended the action and said that help was sent to the fishermen but couldn't reach them. "They had sent a rescue ship but it could not reach due to extreme bad weather," Commoder Lalit Agarwal representing Navy in Odisha said. The government too refused to make a statement unless an enquiry is done in the case. "Right now I can't say unless we enquire the matter," Disaster management minister Surya Naryan Patra said. Meanwhile, the owner of the trawler which sent the trawler to the high sea in spite of cyclone warning has been arrested.[/font][/color][/size]
