Dear Directors,

As an avid watcher of Telugu Cinema, I cannot help but write this letter as it pains me to see the new lows our cinema is reaching. While we as an audience have never expected you to make national award winning movies or movies that will be critically acclaimed, we also did not ask to make cinema that insults us and takes us for granted. While this style of “template” movies have been going on for a few years now, a director of the stature of Trivikram also choosing to use the template surely makes this a new low. Unfortunately, due to the unimaginable success of the movie, we may have almost reached a point of no return. While the fault does lie partially with the audience as well who are lapping up to the endless shots of sidekicks being kicked, heroines being mere mannequins and the story being only on paper, that should still not act as a deterrent towards making creative cinema that improves every year.

Entertaining movies were made in the 90′s and early noughties as well and while they also had their share of negatives, they still stuck to the main story line or at least tried to weave characters around the main story line and the lead heroines had some kind of partially important characters. The state of movies today is such that any previous movie can be taken and all a director has to do is replace the lead hero and heroine and call it a new movie. It would still make the same money because the lead hero provides a new style which will be lapped up by his fans and audience.

If this is not a shame, then I wonder what is. Though there are more than 10 directors (of which 5 of them call themselves top directors), almost all directors are interchangeable and it would make no difference whatsoever who they are. You guys have lost your individuality. Heck, I wonder if you even have one now to regain after making all these movies. In fact, due to the lack of originality, slapstick comedy and your ignorance of audience taste, I wonder if changing your name from Directors to Managers would make more sense since what you are doing is essentially managing a group of actors over a period of time with an age old formulaic script. The target for you guys is not good cinema but to earn maximum revenue for your company oops producer. Sounds like a software company? Actually let’s not insult the software people by using their analogy (as much as I despise their style of working, this would be a new low even for them)

So directors, the decision is yours. How do you want to be remembered 30 years down the lane? If at all you would even be remembered (unless you are referred to as the dark decade of Telugu cinema). When you and we look back at movies of the black and white era, we remember movies like Missamma and GundammaKatha for their beautiful stories and dialogues and not for the revenues they made. Even looking back at movies made 15 years ago, we remember the wonderful screenplay of Okkadu and the charming love story in Tholiprema and not the gross revenue earned divided by the number of times someone got slapped. You can choose to remain the directors you are currently (who churn out money minting movies without story or sensibilities) or rise above the mediocrity and identify the needs of the audience and the situation around you and make more sensible movies (not critical art house movies but just more unique movies that are not based on a formula).
In the event of deciding to continue making these “commercial entertainers” I would advise from not calling them cinema but calling the “thing” that you make as “Telugu Entertainment Shows” and advertise the slaps, the no-dialogue heroine, and the super hero and proclaim proudly that there would be no story. People who have been missing the Circus and monkey shows would definitely come and watch these shows instead.
